I cant believe a professional athlete, would need a job in order to live a decent life..
Out of all the professional sports..WNBA players make BY FAR, the least amount of money..

They probably have college players that probably earn more then them behind close doors.

WNBA

Exact numbers for the Women's National Basketball Association's value are tough to come by, but it's no secret that the league is struggling. Attendance is down 20 percent from when the league first started in 1997, and there are only 12 teams right now, compared with the 16 that existed in 2000.

League minimum salary: The minimum salary for players with zero to two years of service is $35,190. Players who've been in the league for at least three years can earn no less than $51,000.

Highest-paid player: The maximum salary for a WNBA player is $99,500, a figure that a number of players earn.

This is how messed up this is: this coming season - minimum wage in the NBA - we're talking about the 15th man who's never eligible to play unless the injury bug hits - gets a little under 5x of the highest paid WNBA player ($473,604).

If you want your daughter to be a professional athlete in the US then you have to get them involved in tennis or golf.

They should lower the rim already. I want to see dunks. The WNBA is worse than college basketball.

its not messed up. All salaries are dictated by market. The WNBA doesnt make money so neither to the people who work for it.

I say the same thing all the time... It drives me nuts when I hear people bitching about athlete's bloated salaries. You think baseball players make too much? There is nothing stopping anyone from throwing a ball 95mph and hitting a target the size of a frisbee. Go learn that skill and you too can make millions. Of course you have to do it in pressure situations, and with 50k people screaming at you, and you have to travel... you get the idea.

lol. all the nba players, even the top stars, worked jobs during the off-season in the 60's to make ends meet.

but isn't that a different question? if you're just basing the justification on the difficulty of the task, then fine. but isn't the question also why do we value these skills to this extent ($20-25M a year for one person) in the first place?

It's entertainment and entertainment is a valuable commodity. People want to be entertained and will pay to get it.

Yeah, 40 years ago.

Honestly, i was one of the people that watch the sport for the 1st 2 seasons (when the liberty was in the finals), then completely got board with it.

ESPN doesn't even show highlights of games..they dont even have a 30 minute segment , like they do with every other sport..

i went to one liberty game and loved it. these girls played 100x more D than the knicks, picked up in the backcourt, played with intensity and cared about every single possession.

They shouldn't be paid high salaries. With a few exceptions there are very few quality players in the WNBA and the league doesn't make money. They are bleeding the NBA dry.

That being said your value should be in what you bring to the table. If you can fill an arena you should be paid. The NBA needs to structure itse;f more like the NFL so we don't have Marbury, Curry and every other move Isiah ever made ruining the fans lives.

I can't tell weather thats good D or just horrible offense, you see them miss point blank shots consistantly

the task is part of it, but the point is its all about market. If the Libery were selling out and charging for tix what the Knicks get then they should be paid more. They just arent.

Im not sure I follow you on this..If the liberty sold out then they would get paid more..

If you put A rod on the royals, his salary stays the same. How could you get paid more depending (unless it's endorsements)depending on the market you play in, that sounds crazy

Stop thinking so literally. If womens bball was more popular = more fans, salaries would be more.

Have they ever tried to have an NBA/WNBA double feature on some nights? Might help attract more fans. Part of the problem could be the economy, only so many dollars to go around.

Most of them do. Most play both seasons.

I don't think that is possible. The WNBA season is the duration of the summer. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
