1- I am for it and the builders have the right to build it.
2- I am against it, but the builders have the right to build it.
3- I am against it and the buiklers have to right to build it.

Where do you stand on this issue?
I am with the first folks, I am for it and builders have the rght to build it 2 blocks away from WTC. Many muslims died on September 11th as well. Many others are fightting america's warns believing in its ideals. They have a right to that spot as much as any other american.

I am against it but they have the right to build it. Why am I against it? Americans are always asked to be sensitive to other cultures and in this case I think it should be the other way around. A mosque will be a reminder for many people of this painful day. I think the builders of the mosque should be sensitive to that and build elsewhere. Similar to if a Christian group flew to a middle eastern country and killed 3000 people I do not believe it would be right for another christian group to then plant a church close to that location as well. Sensitivities should take over at some point.
I just hope that people will like me

How bout a middle eastern restaurant or another group of people that wore a head wrap? Should they refrain from building anything in the area?

If an atheist group carried out a terrorist act - should I then change how I live my life because someone may be offended by atheists? Why should people refrain from doing something within their rights because someone else associates them with an act they had nothing to do with?

The people building the Mosque are innocent and the association with terrorists is something that exists in other peoples minds.

Christians did enslave and kill thousands of people in the U.S. and many Christian church's encouraged slavery - sometimes on "biblical" grounds. No one believes Christians should not build church's here.

I back religious freedom and not indict a whole religion for the acts of the few.

America is held at a higher standard because we do too.

I am for it and agree with Naload. The arguments for not having it there are shallow.

Religious intolerance gave us 9/11. Hard to show the terrorists that we are better than they are by responding in kind. We have already gutted our civil liberties because of this horrible event when they were supposed to hate us for our "freedoms".

The president recently declared that he can now order the execution of an American citizen anywhere in the world, even if its far away from the battlefield, without charges, evidence, or a trial. I would be more worried about what our government is doing than being unnerved by some Muslims putting up a cultural center.

agree w nalod here - the acts of a few are not representative of the whole and do not warrant that the mosque be built somewhere else.

I think Synagogues should also be built in Mecca and Tehran and a couple of Churches in Cairo and Bagdad.
This buildings will bring stability and peace.

actually islamic fundamentalists brought us 9/11

Doesnt it say in the Koran that Mohammed owned slaves? Commited acts of violence and married a ten year old girl?

I say build the cultural center, because what I know about Islam doesnt endear me to the religion. Maybe I need to be enlightened some (that is not sarcasm)

i get your gist, but america is not bahgdad, cairo or tehran. cant compare that. we are supposed to be a country that stands for tolerance of all religeons, points of view, etc. a mosque didnt bring down the towers, some extremists did, who are in no way representative of what islam stands for.

we could say the same thing about catholics, christians, etc who go around killing people and saying they're doing it because 'god' told them to.

as i think about this more, maybe it would be the beginning to more tolerance btwn religeons if what you suggest actually did happen. i know it's a fools proposition to think so in this day and age, but the way you start breaking down boundaries is to actually put your stereotypes aside and listen to another's point of view with an open mind. you cant do that though b/c religeon, like politics, is something that few tend to cross sides on no matter how powerful the argument from the other side is.

I'm against it unless they're also putting a church and a temple there. In that case all religions should have the right to be included. Barring that having only a mosque is in bad taste to me. I don't want to blame Islam unilaterally, but the attackers were Muslim and it was used to guide the basis for their attack.

I've heard, however, that Obama is a double secret Muslim.

You misread what I wrote fishmike, I said that we shouldn't respond in kind to their religious intolerance, not ours.

I like your idea of having a religious center there where all religions can have a place of worship in that location. That would open up the possibility for mutual understanding and respect.

This shrine can be built anywhere in the world but they chose an area which is about a block from WTC. This is what history has always been about where ever there is conquest build a mosque. I grew up in India an know this to be fact where ever there is a major Hindu temple you can be sure right next to it or on top of you will see a Mosque. It represented conquest. Just as in Jerusalem. I beleive in religious tolerance but what the building of the mosque near WTC shows is that there is no tolerance from the side that is building the Mosque. I say build it elsewhere and pray for peace.

Yes, I'm not enlightened enough on Islam either. I've been of the view that "fundamentalists"/extremists were to blame, but some folks (like Bill Maher, granted he's as anti-religion as they come...ALL OF THEM) have stated or relayed third person accounts of others saying that Islam is an overtly violent religion at its core. Again I don't enough about it either way, it's just rumblings and ramblings. For now I stick to the idea of innocence until guilt is proven and I would hate aligning myself with the extreme fundamental right in this country that blatantly and irrationally hates.

as if no one of Islamic faith was killed in the towers. This is another case of arrogant american's thinking they are better than everyone else. How many people have been killed to spread christian values around the world.

No one religion follower has caused more death and misery than the catholic missionary.

the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt

Even better. Instead of any buildings dedicated to any single religion, make the people come together.

That's fascinating stuff. So the temple would be like the Muslims telling the world look what we did and now we own the fallen/conquered...or at least that could be the perspective of some?
