"Roger Mason Jr. is a guard that has a good handle that bring the ball up through pressure and get the job done. There is not thing fancy about his dribble but he knows how to get the job done. Many guards in the NBA try to do too much.

Roger Mason on the other hand is a smart player that does exactly what the coach asks him to do. Beside having good ball control he is an excellent passer. It’s very rare that you will see Mason lose control of the ball or make ill advised passes."

- From The Baseline.com

If 6'5 Roger Mason can slide over to the lead guard position the Knicks suddenly can run an imposing defensive shift line

The 6'7, 40 inch vertical leaping 6'5 Azubuike

6'10 Gallinari or The 6'8 Mayor

6'11 Randolph or 6'10 Stoudemire at the four

7'1 Mozgov, as The Most Interesting Knicks player in the world in the middle

Kelenna Azubuike NBA Draft Scouting Report
April 9, 2005

Strengths
Azubuike averaged over 40 points a game in high school, so his scoring prowess is well-established. He's an athletic marvel, chiseled and lean, and owns a 38-40+ inch vertical leap.

Possessing a smooth jump shot and a superior slashing game, Azubuike is probably better-suited to the pro court than the college court. Many of his travelling calls in college would not be called in the NBA, possibly opening up more room for him to maneuver on strong moves to the basket.

The gifted scorer is also a strong free-throw shooter, hitting a cool 75% for his collegiate career, and rarely missing key free throws in tight games. He also managed a 49% mark from the field overall, despite shooting 37% from three-point range, a testament to his excellent mid-range and slashing game.

On his best days, Azubuike finishes like Jason Richardson and shoots like Tracy McGrady. But those days certainly aren't every day.

The junior's defensive skills improved mightily over the course of his UK career, and like many former Tubby Smith players, he projects as an above-average on the ball defender at the next level, something that should help him tremendously as he moves forward.

Most of all, Azubuike's a first-team All-Potential squad member, somewhat of a raw commodity, much as he was upon arriving in Lexington for college.

I think Roger Mason was signed just to be the 5th guard. I don't see him jumping over Toney Douglas or Kelenna Azubuike. Mase is just a spot-up shooter and average defender.

iSergio - you really think Pop would start an "average" defender with the Spurs?

What evidence do you offer to back up your opinion that Mason will be nailed to the pine as just the fifth guard?

He started Mason because Ginobili was injured. When Ginobili was healthy this season, Mason got far less time.

probably, but i sort of would rather have toney play well enough that it's not an issue.

i could see a starting unit of Felton and Azubuike and a backup unit of Toney and Mason. slide Wilson back to the forward, where he backs up Gallo and Amare.

crzymdups - From a distance, Dolan appears to behave like any other executive empowered with more money than God. The Dolans can make decisions based on re-trial and error without suffering any serious consequences.

If it breaks they still own it.

Zeke is yesterdays news until he drives back into Madison Square Garden with a formal title and a reserved parking spot.

I don't think the topic of Roger Mason deserves a thread.

He won't be a big impact.

Mason is insurance. TD is still getting his head around PG but I think he's getting closer. But just in case mason is there for spot minutes and in case of injury.

jrzyhustla - by "he won't be big impact" do you mean Roger Mason:

A. Will not make the rotation

B. Is glued to the bench

C. Barely makes the practice squad

D. Gets cut before the season starts

Then again, a thread that includes a crumb of gossip from the NY Post rumor-merchant Marc Berman is always fashionable

"Walsh has often said he is trying to groom Houston to become a future president or GM. Houston and Thomas played together in Detroit, and a young Houston stole an aging Thomas' minutes. Now Thomas could steal Houston's job. One source claims Houston still dislikes Thomas."

Roger Mason gives you a veteran player who can play a stretch of games if someone gets hurt. He's not a rotation play on this team, but with the SG position having some competition and little depth he's an OK pickup.

This is a non impact move though... just filling out the roster here

TD's minutes? Not saying it can't be done but bring your lunchpail.
DWTDD and all will be well
But of course it is not easy to D'ingWTDD and can lead to transformations such as what
happened to Billy Walker this year. But he is just an apprentice at DWTDD perhaps he can still
grow into it.
Bill Simmons on Tyreke Evans "The prototypical 0-guard: Someone who handles the ball all the time, looks for his own shot, gets to the rim at will and operates best if his teammates spread the floor to watch him."

Olbrannon - after meeting Harry Douglas Sr ii is apparent where DWTDD originated. As you know, sometimes the apprentice can turn on the master, or in this case... eat his proverbial lunch, which all translates into some interesting practice matchups between Mini Mase and TWTDD.

and no, we not talkin' bout Zeke... we talkin' bout practice!

The Answer Man also senses that if Kelenna Azubuike's rehabbed knee allows him to DWKAzD, things could get interesting around here.

I think hes a good addition to the team.. And the price was right.. Found a great interview with the guy here: http://video.msg.com/Home/Roger-Mason-Jr-on-Joining-Knicks-8-11
I don't think there will be a problem unless somebody wants to make a problem, ... If they really want to make a problem, they're going to have to make a decision about how they want to spend their adult life in terms of playing in the NBA or not.

AnubisADL - if Mini Mase could start for a team that won 54 games, it may not be so funny if his shot starts dropping again in the clutch and he defends the perimeter like a New Orleans Saints starting cornerback.

I really don't like Douglas, so if Mason's hand is healthy I don't see why he wouldn't get 15 min a game.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)
