Source: 2 owners rip Thomas deal

At least two NBA owners have complained to the league about the Knicks' new arrangement with Isiah Thomas, who became their part-time consultant Friday while also remaining at FIU, according to a source.

One potential owner who might have complained is new Charlotte owner Michael Jordan, who likely is not a fan of Thomas because Larry Brown is his coach with the Bobcats. The NBA is investigating whether Thomas' contract conforms with NBA bylaws.

In a new rule installed four years ago, NBA front-office personnel are not permitted to scout high-school players unless competing in All-Star tournaments. Also, NBA personnel can't have contact with college players until they declare for the draf

highly speculative but it makes sense, considering Jordan's history with Isiah (Dream Team) and what Berman mentioned

more brilliant reporting by that crack reporter starberman...

One potential owner who might have complained

genius!

of course, some of us could hare added a more in depth piece of history in that isiah and jordan have not gotten along since the bulls-pistons played each other in the playoffs, which also led to speculation as to why isiah was kept off the dream team in 1992.

anyway, the reporting is getting more ridiculous by the day.

Why are other owners complaining about who we hire? Other than possible raising issues that his hiring might violate league rules because he is a college coach, the other teams should have no say in this.

pres, i'm not going to argue about the quality of sports reporting.

but . . . . we all remember the stories - true or not - about stern forcing dolan to hire walsh and relieve isiah of his duties. if true, we can imagine the ego blow that was to little jimmy, and how he would just love to reassert his power buy . . . hmmm, maybe reinstating isiah? so if there's even a whiff of this in the air, why not have the people speak now and set up a groundswell that might help head off this move before it can start?

Sources close to the Knicks report that Carmelo is a done deal.

One unnamed employee, with ties to an intern in the mailroom, intercepted an email addressed to Lala Vasquez.

i hear you, marv, but putting isiah back in charge sounds so implausible, even for dolan. you must have read beck's times blog post on the story.

where is the actual indication that there is a good chance it will happen? he's at best, 7th, in terms of control.

again, isn't it possible that this is partially about dolan reasserting himself as in control in other ways besides the idea that isiah will be back in charge. like, say, dolan may be cool with isiah, but he also wants him to earn all the money paid to him.

i've written this point on this forum at least three times to sfx: crickets...from the posters who repeatedly claim this is a conspiracy with the end result being isiah back in charge.

beck confirmed that isiah was never off the payroll, so why is this such a big deal other than based on fears and speculation?

it's like we're battered wives or something...we need a little perspective, i believe.

i also said i believe they announced this because it would be far worse for that info to come out through a "source" to isola or berman who would make this even worse than it already is. doesn't that make some sense?

can we also not recall that dolan made isiah be the coach after spending big bucks on brown, lenny and the roster?

again, more of the "you broke it, you own it" idea

given that history, it could also be an example of dolan forcing isiah to earn the huge sum of money he is getting...still...since he is still under contract.

plus, for all the hate isiah deservedly receives, some fans and non-knick fans with zero invested in hating isiah, will admit that isiah did show some skill in scouting late in the draft, where we expect to be this year, and in the foreseeable future.

i have read more than one person here say if isiah was just a scout, they'd be fine with it.

well, that's what the statement of his job description was in the press release.

why do we automatically have to assume it's a lie? what the heck would dolan stand to gain by hiding the plan to put isiah back in charge? a little ego boost? he would be ridiculed even more.

Somewhat off this particular topic, but not much- why no outcry from NBA folks about Princess James having an agency which can sign players, while he is still playing in the NBA and also runs a basketball camp where he can have influence future NBA players?

I know he is not employed by a university, but there seem to be conflicts of interest in his case.

not a bad analogy. and zeke's like the serial batterer who wants to sweet-talk his way back in. better off barring the door.

Very insightful Pal, you make a good case. It is pretty obvious that NBA see James as Bread and Butter ad can do whatever he likes. Isiah the washed up Ex player who should be destroyed at every opportunity. NBA always has been a league of double standards.

is isiah being bashed because he's a "washed up Ex player who should be destroyed at every opportunity" or because of the actions he took as gm of the knicks and the resultant effects on the franchise?

Isiah is being bashed because he is the flavor of the day. It doesn't take much for Knicks fans to get their torches going. This is simply the Papers wagging the the Knicks fans tails. Everyone should just have their ignore button on and look forward to the season. If Isiah had input on all the current Knicks players does that make them bad players? This is one time that the Knicks fans should say non story and move on. No point making a mountain out of a mold hill. No point stirring up controversy when there is none this is a time in the Knicks history things are looking positive. Knicks fans should focus on the positives of the coming season.

So if the NBA vetoes this deal, does Isiah keep his FIU job?

If he leaves FIU, I think it's obvious he's out future president, in which I'd consider quitting being a Knick fan.

presike -- snip: but he also wants him to earn all the money paid to him ...

thats a bad reason to hire a failed employee or retain a failed employee. its a sunk cost. eat the cost or risk further damage. as a fan, its insane logic. from a business view, it makes no $ sense either (risk alienating paying customers, further pr disasters, etc). this is why to me, its quite possible that IT could return full force.
