Isiah Thomas nearly climbed the corporate ladder from consultant to Knicks president on Day 1 of his new job with the club.

The Daily News has learned that Donnie Walsh considered resigning after Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan made the controversial move to hire Thomas, but Walsh decided to continue running the team despite his objections to Thomas having a role in the front office.

"Donnie finds this entire thing distasteful," said one NBA source. "He's had second thoughts about staying but he wants to finish the job."

Walsh, who did not return phone calls yesterday, is under contract through 2012. Last month, he denied a published report that he was contemplating retirement for health reasons.

Even more great news:

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/knicks/walsh_your_back_AgooDKBkBqzS3vtJDZu7VP?CMP=OTC-rss&FEEDNAME=

Knicks president Donnie Walsh is livid that Isiah Thomas is back in the organization and feels his standing with the franchise could be compromised by owner James Dolan's decision to rehire Thomas, The Post has learned.

According to a Knicks source, Walsh told Thomas in a face-to-face meeting two weeks ago he did not want him working for the organization. Dolan and Thomas had agreed that Thomas could fill the team's general manager vacancy if Walsh was OK with it.

When Walsh told Thomas he objected, Thomas went back to Dolan, who still has a love affair with the Hall of Famer and seemingly is on a mission to rehab Thomas' image.

Walsh, who had thought the Isiah issue was dead, was not debriefed until after the hiring was agreed upon, and he reluctantly put his name on a joint statement with Dolan. It was only recently that Walsh found out Thomas had been in Dolan's ear for months, offering free advice.

Some of Dolan's top advisors, including Garden president Hank Ratner, tried to talk Dolan out of naming Thomas as a consultant because of the public-relations backlash.

"Donnie doesn't want him there, nobody wants him there but Dolan," the team source said. "Isiah seems to have Jim wrapped around his finger."

time to grab the pitchforks and the torches... this is ****ing bull****

I presented an argument for why this might be okay... I retract that entirely after this is coming out. This is completely and utterly unacceptable

Dolan wants to be relevant again.
And this will make Knicks irrelevant in no time.
If Tomas is back and Walsh out I am losing interest to this cirka.

Dolan is the poster child for what goes wrong with the second generation in very wealthy families.

I've always given Isiah a bit of a pass on his moves when he was in charge- largely because I thought Dolan was the ultimate force behind the moves.

Seriously bad. I am about to become not a Knick Fan.

part of me wishes Donnie resigned just so a glaring flood light would've shone on what a retard this ******* owner is

I would've loved David Stern scolding Dolan again for being inept

Donnie shouldn't resign. He needs to stand up to Dolan and stop this nonsense. For Donnie's sake, and for our/fans sake. If Donnie gets fired, fine. Then the blame and hate is on Dolan....and Donnie gets his full salary but the team is in deep trouble.

If Walsh leaves, or gets fired, I'm ordering Direct TV and becoming an Oklahoma City Thunder fan.

F*** Dolan, and f*** Thomas.

This is insane- it's like some sort of terrible dream. I laughed at the rumours last month about IT coming back to the knicks because the very idea that anyone would actually be so retarded to make him GM again (let alone GM of the same team he got fired for doing such a historically bad job with) seemed completely implausible. How can an owner be so f***ing stupid?! How is it humanely possible?! Loyalty to friends is one thing but the Knicks are billion dollar business- why would you re-hire someone who has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they cannot do the job over 5 disasterous years, to EXACTLY the same job after you have had to hire a replacement to clean up his mess over the past 2 years?! Because you're friends with him?!?!?! For f***s sake! Words fail me!

And the sheer disrespect towards Donnie- no wonder he's so livid- after all the hard work he's put in righting this sorry ship of an organisation, over the past 2 years, and just as he's turned the corner and got us on the right path, Dolan stomps in and declares his desire to replace him with the same man who he's just spent 2 years cleaning up after. There's no way Donnie gets extended after this year, and there's no way he'd accept it anyways. Dolan is refusing to hire any GM Walsh has proposed (though I think Chris Mullin is pretty much the same as IT, so I'm glad we haven't hired him), so yep, I think we can pretty much bank on IT being the successor.

Whats the f***ing point?!

Think DW is still there because of the troops he has brought in. He wants to finish the job he started. This begs the question did Dolan pressure Walsh into the February trade? Don't think he wants to abandon d'Antoni and the players he has brought in.

Tiger Woods doesn't look the same without that swag does he? How can this team develop there own swag with a front office circus going on?

As spoken elsewhere speaks volumes of Dolan's will to have his way and damn what he is advised.

I made my handle for a reason and now this. It might be the last straw for me.
I want to leave something that's going to stand for a long timeI want to leave a legacy,I want to leave tradition.I want to leave an imprint,a blueprint in terms of how people play, and how they coach and how they respond when they put on the Knick uni.

as a knick fan for 30 years, I might have to agree with you. If Isiah ever becomes GM again, I stop rooting for this team....

If true, this is obviously disgusting. However, I'm not convinced that any of this is true. What we do know is many of the writers reporting these sort of stories are the same writers who we now know were simply making up information to sell papers, during the LeBron fiasco. I'm not convinced this is any different.

LOL did you really expect Dolan to continue to give Walsh free reign after his plan FAILED. We didnt get Lebron or any of the top 3. Im expecting Houston and Thomas to be President and GM in the near future. This will be the case ESPECIALLY if Thomas can convince Carmelo Anthony to come here.

dolan is a clown. if walsh's plan failed, IT failed 100000x over. stern needs to ban IT since he is working with college kids. at least it sounds good enough to pull off.

GO TEAM VENTURE!!!!!

What team do you root for again? Not the Knicks, right? Just checking.
