I hate it when teams over estimate their bargaining position, but I think you're right- Denver started off with their "we'll never ever even entertain trading him" position, now they've shifted to the Kevin Garnett template, still thinking they're entitled to get equal value for Carmelo. If you look at the Denver message boards on realgm, some folks are expecting the starting offer to include Gallo AND AR + more. Much like Toronto, they probably won't realise that their player is leaving and they will get nothing in return until it's too late. The truth is if carmelo doesn't sign an extention and lets it known he plans to go to NY, Denver has no leverage what so ever.
The thing is, I'm not desperate to get Carmelo, I'm happy to see how Gallo and Ar develop so I'm not in a rush for us to trade for him. I would personally leave any offer until the trade deadline, as the longer they leave it the less value they can expect to get in return- by Jan/Feb all I would be offering is Azubuike, Chandler, Bill Walker and Curry's contract. I'd actually prefer to get him next off season as the new CBA may mean we get him cheaper- it's a bit risky trading for him and signing him to an extention when we don't know whats going to happen CBA wise.
