Tyreke Evans speeding, on camera
August, 2, 2010 Aug 23:24PM ETEmail Print Comments14 By Henry Abbott
Archive Who knows how many athletes have gotten in trouble in the past for speeding.

Tyreke Evans is one of the unlucky ones who not only got caught, but also stars in nearly 14-minutes of public video tape of one of the dumbest days of his lives.

I don't even really know why I watched the whole thing. It's pretty much exactly what you'd expect.

Even more mystifying is that I watched the whole thing twice. There's just something about NBA stars caught on video.

And this one also comes with some mystery: Who's driving the silver car?

Evans is pulled over, eventually, in his Kings-purple Mercedes. But he's blatantly racing another driver in a silver something-or-other -- there's a close up from the aerial video about 1:39 into the video -- and police say they could not locate that driver.

There are some moments worth noting: About 1:53 in, Evans is stuck behind some cars. The police camera angle widens to keep the two cars in the screen at the same time. The silver car gets well ahead.

Evans then frees himself, however, and that's when he really puts his pedal to the floor. About 5:14 in the video there's a moment that'll make you cringe, where another car seems not to realize the Indy 500 is going on all around, and brushes near. That's the moment, for me, when it really feels like this is not at all a celebrity story, or even a crime story. It's just a story about doing the most boring thing in the world: Driving along the freeway. We have all done it, we will all do it. And as we do, once in a while there's some nut with a big engine and something to prove who makes sport out of almost killing the rest of us.

It's all fun and games unless something goes wrong. On public roads, of course, nobody can ever promise you that something won't go wrong. I know that and you know that. Tyreke Evans didn't know that, apparently. But he might be getting the picture now -- or at least the video.

Beat me to it- I had a thread that I was going to call:Was Tyreke Evans Asleep During Rookie Orientation Week?

Surprised that Evans' lack of judgment has not been a topic of discussion around here prior to today given the love Evans seems to have from so many on UK. I guess that people only care to comment about his speed on the court, and not look at his speed in a car. Then I read that he had been the driver of an SUV in a fatal drive-by shooting less than 3 years ago, and I wonder even more about his character and judgment.

Evans, and whoever was in the car he was racing, put the lives of others in jeopardy, and is lucky he was able to get out of the car without causing a major accident.

A rather critical article, titled- Video confirms it's too early to give Evans keys to team gives us some other info about Evans and how he has been treated in Sacramento that is less than complimentary:
http://www.sacbee.com/2010/08/01/2928537/video-confirms-its-too-early-to.html

This article which pissed off some Kings' fans on RealGm, also claims that Evans has been given the star treatment by the Kings, while other young players have been criticized without thought by Westphal.

Yet almost from the moment Evans emerged as a major talent, the Kings altered the rules. They handed him the keys to the Mercedes. There was one set of guidelines for the prized rookie and another set for everyone else – a development that caused resentment in the locker room and is among the reasons Kevin Martin, Spencer Hawes and Andres Nocioni welcomed trades.

Evans' personal trainer, for instance, enjoys unique access before and after games. A practice was canceled so Evans could fly to Las Vegas and meet President Barack Obama. Westphal routinely jumped Hawes, Donté Greene, Jason Thompson, Omri Casspi and other young Kings for mistakes yet blatantly looked the other way when Evans' game became linear – times he dominated the ball or ignored wide-open teammates.

Princess James also has a speeding incident (105 MPH, I think), by the way. You wonder about the maturity of some players, and how their coaches and owners coddle them. Then I think about the Hollywood celebs who are given dozens of chances and get off easily if they break the law and how this molds them into people who think they can do what they want because there are never consequences. It's the same thing, and it only leads to trouble.

Will Evan have learned from this experience? Does he have his own little crew, maybe including some of the guys he was with in that drive-by shooting, hanging around him- giving him bad advice- pushing him to drive 120+MPH on a crowded thruway? You have to wonder. Now Cousins, big man with tons of talent and what seems to be an attitude comes to the Kings, and you can only think of what may go wrong on that team over time if things take a certain turn here or there and behavior/personality issues are not addressed properly by their coach and management.

these guys make so much money - they should either 1) build their own racetrack in their backyards or 2) join on with bmw racing program in the offseason.....with that said, most, if not all, nba contracts have clauses (see vlad rad from a few years ago) prohibits them partaking in this type of risky behavior

Stupid but he did not do anything a lot of 20 year old guys do.

A friend of mine is 25 now and he still does this crap. Everybody agrees he is an idiot, but what are yo going to do.

A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

I think it comes down to a person in Evans' position realizing that as the future leader and face of a franchise, he can't be doing something that can easily get him, or someone else, injured and alter the future of a Kings and his teammates.

I had no idea that he had also been involved in a drive-by killing, and even though there were no charges against him, you have to think that as the driver he knew something was going down. You add that incident and this one together, and there should be enough red lights for the Kings to have sat down with him and read him the riot act, although you wonder about this based on the article which indicated that they coddle him a bit too much.

When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.

Time for him to be a man.

I don't care what other people do. High speed crap like that shouldn't be done by ANYONE. If he loses control for even a second, you could be talking about an accident involving MANY.

And if it's true that he has a separate pair of guidelines from the rest of his teammates, then I can see this turning into Gilbert Arenas part deux.

those HEMI's are packing serious power... he pulled away from Evans' AMG S55 at a pretty high speed... very impressive.

what was not impressive was their decision to be racing in the middle of rush hour with all those other cars around them... idiots.

As I get older, I tend to think this stuff should be dealt with much harsher.

Throw him out of the league, cancel his contract, let him apply for reinstatement in a year. Give the kings a make up draft pick- but to some degree, force franchises to do better in terms of monitoring, tracking and back ground checks.

This could have killed innocent people.

man, I guess SacTown is the place to commit a crime. Look how long it took to get a cop on the scene. Me an my boys are about to pile into the minivan. head down there for a mini crime spree :)
the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt

I go through it on the Grand Central going between Jackie Robinson and 82nd and Steinway all the time, although the GC doesn't have the kind of long stretch that Evans was speeding on. Motorcycles and cars playing tag and darting between cars are easily hitting 85-95 on the GC, a road not made for that kind of speed.

Idiots. They are too dangerous to be allowed near any sort of vehicle. They both should have their licenses revoked permanently and spend major time in jail. I agree with suspending him from the league for a long time also. There has to be repercussions for reckless actions and only then will people take notice.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I was waiting for someone to respond with someone like this. Not really a big deal? Please stay off any road I drive on if you feel this way. People could've died because of his reckless actions. IMHO, this is way worse than drug abuse, which has gotten players suspended for multiple seasons before.

There is The Law of what man had to get for speeding, racing, and reckless driving.
He should get what The Law states. No more no less.
And this has nothing to do with his job in NBA.
If NBA has Polices for this case no matter what they are this polices should be applied to him. No more no less.
Nobody should get special treatment.

Actually, this falls under "for conduct detrimental to the team." in their contracts. So this is under NBA policies.

As far as the action itself, this is a very big deal. In my younger years, I also was a knucklehead and raced from time to time but having kids gives you a different perspective. I now have a 17 year old with a drivers license and I am scared to death everytime she drives.
