From Hoopsworld:

The Big Leprechaun: Shaquille O'Neal has been the biggest free agent on the market, both literally and figuratively, for the past few weeks. There have been all kinds of rumors associating him with the Atlanta Hawks, San Antonio Spurs, and even teams from overseas. However, according to A. Sherrod Blakely of Comcast SportsNet the big fella will be joining forces with the defending Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics.

"My main thought was that I would like to play for a winning franchise, somebody that's used to winning, somebody that keeps winning," said O'Neal in an interview with NBA.com on Monday.

The Celtics certainly fit the criteria O'Neal set and of all the contending teams they currently have the biggest role for him. Boston will be without the services of usual starting center Kendrick Perkins at the beginning of the season and they also lost power forward/center Rasheed Wallace to retirement. They did add another low post player earlier this offseason in Jermaine O'Neal but you can never have enough talented big men in the NBA. The Celtics saw championship #18 get away from them this past season due to a lack of depth inside, so they know more than anybody the importance of frontcourt depth.

Although a fraction of "the most dominant player ever" as he used to describe himself, O'Neal is still very capable. He averaged 12 points and six rebounds a contest last year for the Cleveland Cavaliers while shooting an outstanding 56% from the field. His size and strength are still something that most teams aren't equipped to match up with and it'll definitely come in handy against the likes of the Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard of Pau Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers.

O'Neal was said to be looking for a significant payday next season, upwards of around $8 million. The Celtics only have the veteran's minimum to offer though, so unless a sign-and-trade is worked out with the Cleveland Cavaliers Shaq will be making around $1.5 million next season. The possibility of a sign-and-trade is pretty low since the Celtics lack any assets that Cleveland would find attractive.

The willingness of the Celtics to sacrifice both money and individual production has been a key to their recent revitalization. In the past Shaq may have had some issues with making the adjustments that they're going to ask him to make. This could quite possibly be his last stand in the NBA though and he's looking to go out on top. With a championship caliber team already in-tact don't be surprised if Shaq quickly buys into the system. Technically he doesn't have a choice.

Time for the Old Diesel to put it in "Park" and call it a career. This is probably more to do with Kobe moving past him on the ring counter.

Kendrick Perkins is out until January so great move by Boston. Shaq could still give you 20 good minutes. They also signed Jermaine O'Neal so it's not like Shaq needs to carry them. I still think Boston is the best team in the East.

Im a little nervous on this--I will have to winder if it wasnt better to spend our 3mm for 1 years on shaq instead of this complete unknown Russian who looks very raw. Shaq used correctly for 15 minutes gives you that enforcer who can still score and intimidate. Maybe we get that with turriaf but Turriaf isnt 7-3 350

There is no way Shaq would have come here - even for $3M. He wants a ring.

But I agree - $3.5M for Timofey Mozgov was too much. I would have rather signed Louis Amudson.

The Big Knick I doubt would have happened. This team needs leadership which he can provide but that player needs to be on the court in crunch time and Hack a Shaq prevents that.

A Celts-Heat Semifinal and I have to root for the Celts?

Shaq with Nate? Is there a paper towel tube and hampster joke in the making here?

As Amare would say, "oye Vay!"

How do you know that if you know nothing about him, and really haven't seen him play

Anytime I see Shaq next to a 7 footer he looks 3-4 inches taller. And 350 has to be right

Check this out at the 1:09 mark. I believe Yao is supposed to be 5-6 inches taller than Shaq if you go by their measurements. I don't think that is right.

MDA wants to go uptempo, which is why DW is going after all these athletic players who can run in that type of system... Shaq is not a good fit for that kind of system... under different circumstances i would have been fine w/bringing Shaq in on a low money deal, but not in this one... i have no idea what to expect out of the Russian kid, but at least there's some possible upside potential there... Shaq is almost ready for retirement... even tho i think Shaq is still probably a better player than any rook we could play at that position, he doesn't fit with what the Knicks are trying to do here.

Great move by the Celts if they get Shaq. I think Shaq wants a shot to knock off Miami's big-three slimballs, and the Celts provide the best chance.

Timo is about what he COULD become. Shaq is the past and could be a nice touch for a stacked team making a playoff run.

Timo is a project.

It seems every team he leaves is left with a bad taste in their mouth. Just glad NY is not looking at him.
the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt

So if he is signing for 1.5 MM why didn't he go to the Heat?

Don't get me wrong - I think he is a good fit for the celtics, but he won a ring in Miami with Wade and played with Lebron so I would think that should count for something.

Interesting that he chose the Celtics when the prime o his career was as a Laker.

So what? Karl Malone went to the Lakers after being denied in the WCF by the forever. Shaq is still a good player and will help the Celts.
