Yao says he may quit if foot doesn’t fully heal
24 minutes ago

BEIJING (AP)—Houston Rockets center Yao Ming(notes) says he may quit basketball after next season if he doesn’t fully recover from his foot injury.

In comments to Chinese state media Monday, Yao sounded far from optimistic about his future and also made a rare criticism of China’s national basketball program.

Yao missed last season after foot surgery. He tells Xinhua News Agency he doubts he will play at the 2012 London Olympics. He says if the injury does not heal next season he “might choose to call it quits.”

Yao also says Chinese basketball administrators were too focused on the Beijing Olympics and neglected developmental teams and the domestic professional league.

This is sad, I have mad respect for Yao, he gives it his all every night, not only for his NBA team, but for his National team as well.

These 7'6" guys are just not built to withstand the physical abuse of the game.
We see it over and over again. There's a limit to how tall you can be and stay healthy.

Even size. The "Tractor traylor" type player is almost gone. Big Baby Davis players usually break down.

IM amazed Shaq has played as long as he has. Man is not super tall but he is a large human.

Yao is a good guy, I hope he does well this season. It would be nice if he could play a whole season and the national team leave him alone and let him rest.

It is sad if he has to call it quits.

He was good for the league in many ways- for Houston, the NBA in general, and the world BB comminity, and when you read his interviews you realize the guy really gets "it"- the game; being a pro-athlete; and life in general.

I am not sure if it is a similar injury but Illguskas missed a lot of time early in his career because of foot problems. Hopefully it is something that will continue to improve with time.

Sabonis at one time I believe might have been the best player on the planet when he was locked up in the Soviet team.

Bye the time he got here his knees were shot and he could not move very well. He got to portland he was already 31 years old!

Those portland teams were stacked with big men. In his Seven years he played with:

Uncle Cliffy
Rashweed
Jermain O'neal
Chris Dudley
Buck Williams
Kelvin Cato
Donkey Dale Davis
Shawn Kemp
and.........
Zach Randolph!

Arvydas in his youth was pretty slim and mobile for a big guy. Not until his 30's did he fill out.

Yao has a huge frame and just to be able to move that Noggin around is a feat unto itself! Yao towers over shaq but also his girth. The man is massive! His head alone must weight 50 lbs and be the size of a 7 year old child!

The Russian center is 7 1 I think and not too heavy for that size.

On the flip side a lot of 7 footers play well into their late 30's.

A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

One of the most unique players we've ever seen but a shame he basically was never able to really fulfill his promise because of the injuries.

Wish we had a chance to have seen him in the NBA in his prime. Even as a shell of what he once was you could see that he was a special player.

And yeah- one of the best big men passers to have played in the game.

Would have been interesting to see him and Shaq banging into each other in their primes.

I saw him playing in Soviet Union in his prime.
He was dominant and was much bigger that most of the players.
I also sow Semjonova. She was playing for my city Riga/Latvia TTT team.
Semlonova was 6'11" and TTT with her won all possible woman bbal titles like for 10 years or so.
She used to leave in the same neighborhood were I was leaving and I saw her a lot in buses. She was always bending her head down to not hit the roof of the bus.
And man she was ugly as hell...

Out of all the Soviet republics, Latvia had the most special bball players. Closely followed by Lithuania.
