Hornets Want Okafor Included In Any Paul Deal
More Hornets News

Jul 23, 2010 3:25 PM EST

If the Hornets are going to trade All-Star point guard Chris Paul, they reportedly want teams to take on the contract of Emeka Okafor.

Okafor's contract has four years and $52 million left on it.

The second overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft, Okafor has career averages of 13.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 1.8 blocks.

Do you know what this would cost us? 26 MILLION in cap would come in so atleast 22 would have to go back essentially the whole team. On top if it that would give us a cap number of over 50mm next year --taking us out of any FA.
So Chris Paul could cost Carmelo Anthony and our whole roster of youth/

Agreed that this is silly. It just isn't going to happen (and isn't even possible prior to December 15).

I'm still on board, give me Emeka and CP3 and I am one happy camper. I cant believe some are actually against adding a SUPERSTAR PG, its unreal to me. We have been waiting YEARS UPON YEARS for a GREAT PG to lead us.

CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT,CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT, CP3 IS A SUPERSTAR TALENT.

If we need to give up the chance to get Carmelo, I say no. That, to me, is a dealbreaker, because we can't possibly get close enough to the cap to sign Carmelo with this, even if we let every other player expire or decline the team options. The only way I'd consider it under those circumstances is a three-way trade where Okafor goes elsewhere.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

That gives us a roster of

Amare
Chris Paul and Emeka--and almost everything else we have goes to NO AND then we get no Carmelo.no F way.

If someone wants EO--why wouldnt they just do a straight deal with NO? hes got a hefty contract and declining performance--dont see it. EO is the kind of guy Curry goes for.

Well someone would have to do something to sweeten the pot, obviously. But, regardless, Okafor is a solid center and he's still above average, IMHO. I can see someone taking him if there's a little incentive.

I maintain I'm all for trading to get Paul even if it means including Randolph or Gallo in the trade. However, if we have to take back Okafor, then that puts the brakes on this trade for me. I will not take myself out of possibly signing Melo this summer by taking on Okafor. If Okafor is a must, I'll wait until the summer to what happens with Melo before re-exploring the Paul option.

I think it's going to be sweet if we get Paul.'

Walsh will need to make a three team deal if 0for4 is going to be included. There has to be some kind of Reggie Evans/Marcus Banks expiring swap we can make.(if those contracts are still valid)

Yup. What is the point of adding another superstar if we have to gut our roster right now which looks very promising? We need to stay the course and see what we have in Felton before making any moves.

i honestly can't believe some guys are hedging on acquiring a superstar player because of who we MIGHT be able to sign next year... people are willing to throw away young assets to clear cap space but they won't part with young assets to acquire 1 of the best PG's in the game... it's some serious insanity going on up in here.

Not only do they gut the team, they take on more contracts in doing so

Sorry, but that's an over-simplication that I don't think is actually accurate. The main point is Okafor's contract removing all flexibility. Okafor reduces the value of the trade, for our situation, IMHO. Chris Paul is great, but if he's got nobody left to play with, we're not in good shape. I think most people are willing to give either future stars (Gallinari/AR) or cap space, just not both in the same trade. Now, if they take Eddy Curry + Azubuike + Chandler + Turiaf for Paul and Okafor, I don't think anyone would mind not getting Carmelo. To give $12+ million in cap flexibility, Gallinari, and two other young players would be insanity.

Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.
