Just heard it on the radio that Bucher is reporting that AH is favorite to be GM under Donnie.

Former New York Knicks shooting guard Allan Houston is the front-runner to be the team's next general manager under team president Donnie Walsh, according to league sources.

Walsh would neither confirm nor deny Houston's status. "He is working with me to learn the position of GM, whether with the Knicks or elsewhere," Walsh said. "I feel Allan has the tools to be a great GM."

Sources said both owner James Dolan and coach Mike D'Antoni are comfortable with Houston, who is currently listed as the team's special assistant to the president.

Ric Bucher covers the NBA for ESPN The Magazine.

If I was interviewing him for the position, my decision would hinge on how he answered this one question: Would you have given yourself a $100 million contract in 2001?
All joking aside, I'd have no problem with him as GM. He can't be worse than Mullen at as GS....can he?

I would love H2O as the next GM, but is there any proof that he would make a good GM?

I know he is learning under Donnie, but I would not want him to just be handed the job unless he is 100% capable of becoming a worthy GM.

At least this would prevent Isiah from becoming the GM like speculated before, haha.

I can deal with Allan Houston as GM of the knicks. He's learning from one of the best GM's out there. He'll be like Ernie Grunfeld, former Knicks player to be GM of the team.

Just as long as the rumor about the abomination (Thomas) is not true I would be ok with it.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

In a perfect world, I would want Kevin Pritchard. But Allan is a safe pick. You won't have to worry about him harassing the head of the marketing department or creating some other embarrassment.

I thought this was going to say something about Walsh's health. I think Houston would be ok in the position. He wouldn't be my first choice but he is a good guy.

daddy that is a good question and not a joke..a good answer would be "as it turned out i would not give a max contract to a shooting guard on the downside of his career"...
"and i wouldnt hire that guy as a gm a few years after retirement because he's friendly with the owner and is good at kissing butt"..

Of course we can forget about acquiring Muslims, Jews, Pagans, and Atheists through the draft or by trade. As long as he does not bring on Charley Ward as his assistant GM, I suppose I can put up with him. You also hope that he does not make any deals like the last one the Knicks gave him as a player.

More seriously, I like the idea that we might be promoting from within and the fact that he was a former Knick. You have to figure that he has given his input to Walsh, and if chosen for the job, he has shown an understanding of, and learned from what has gone on over the past few years, at least in Walsh's eyes.

Pritchard might be my choice also- as a GM he is definitely a major player in the league, but if Houston has promise, I like promoting a member of our own Knicks "community."

Does anyone have specific info of input he has given Donnie? Any players he has recommended or not recommended? Don't recall any reports every saying or writing "...behind the scenes, Allan Houston was urging Donnie Walsh to...?" Just wondering.

He wasn't on the downside of the career when he got that contract. His downside began the second he got the surgery, which was two years after he signed the contract.

No though, he shouldn't have gotto that contract.

LOL +1.

My standards with the Knicks have become so low, I'd be happy with any GM not named Isiah Thomas.

If you believe the stuff which came out about the Knicks' after their meeting with LeBron- the criticism that Walsh was in a wheelchair and did not present the image of virility of the Russian (although I hardly think Thorn can be considered a young stud at this point), in Houston you would have a guy who is young enough to understand where players are coming from, and a spokesman who presents a young and energetic face to the organization.

I'd love to hear some stuff about the ideas he has proposed in his capacity with the Knicks, and even if he has ever had battles or disagreements with Walsh over the direction the team is taking. So far nothing, though.

Yeah but the first 2 years in work in the front office for free, no salary, he help IT with the young dude's coming up, he donated large amounts of his time in the community..

I'd like to see him get out in front with more commentary before handing him the GM job... like make him sit with Mike Breen for a couple of games at least to hear his input (or a couple of Knicks at Night specials). He is a completely unknown quantity for us to make a judgement.
Rose is not the answer.

dont blame ewing for demanding a trade..blame dave checketts who took on bad salarys along with glen rice just to appease david falk ,ewing agents..checketts knew he was out since cablevision just took over the knicks..checketts main reason making the trade was to get in good with falk when he left the knicks which he knew was happening shortly..he only cared about himself and not the well being of the franchise he was leaving behind
