It is because 2nd round contracts a non guaranteed so they usually get a 2 year deal. Some get longer deals.
Utah was probably being cheap and signed him to a 2 yr deal not know he would be this good. The thing is top prospects arent going to slip into the 2nd round in most cases. NY Knicks - Retirement home for players and GMs

well if fields has a really good year, the knicks may have to alter there 2011/12 plans.
