LAS VEGAS - Could Broadway get its own Big Three?

While addressing guests at Carmelo Anthony's wedding in Manhattan on Saturday, Chris Paul made it known that he is open to the idea.

According to multiple sources who attended the wedding, which was held at Cipriani on 42nd Street, there was a common theme among the best wishes to Anthony and his new bride, television personality LaLa Vazquez: that they should consider taking up permanent residence in New York and that Anthony should take the challenge LeBron James passed on with the Knicks.

And with less-than-pleased Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke in attendance, Paul - during his address to the happy couple - said he wants to get Anthony to come with him and join Amar'e Stoudemire with the Knicks "and form our own Big Three" to challenge the newly formed Miami triumvirate of James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

Stoudemire, who also attended the wedding, loved what he heard. When he first arrived in New York the previous Saturday night, he reportedly said, "I've talked to Carmelo Anthony that he needs to come out here."

Anthony is scheduled to be a free agent next summer and Paul has an opt-out in 2012. And it is no coincidence that the Knicks, who missed out on James in this year's free-agent frenzy, are making sure they maintain enough salary-cap space to be in play for either or both.

Several NBA players have said Anthony is hesitant to sign a three-year, $65- million extension with Denver because he is unsure about the franchise's ability to build a championship-caliber team. He also is concerned about whether coach George Karl, who is recovering from neck and throat cancer, will be able to return.

Karl, who was in attendance here Sunday to watch his son Coby and the Nuggets beat the Knicks, 100-90, in an NBA Summer League game, told Newsday that he is "not 100 percent yet" but is "feeling stronger every day." His goal is to be back on the Nuggets' bench in time for the start of the regular season, but he added, "My health is still the first priority."

When asked if he is concerned about Anthony leaving the Nuggets as a free agent, Karl replied, "I don't get involved in that very much. A long time ago, I said, 'I'm a coach.' The business of basketball is always going to be messing with you. 'Melo's a great player. If he signs or doesn't sign, I think he'll have a great year for us next year."

Though there is a risk in leaving money on the table, especially with the NBA and the players' union set to begin talks for a new collective-bargaining agreement next summer, those close to Anthony say he is intrigued by what a move to the Garden stage could do for his career. He has consistently lagged behind fellow Class of '03 stars James and Wade in popularity. His jersey, in fact, isn't among the top 10 in sales, according to the NBA.

Anthony could try to push for a trade, perhaps a trade-and-extend deal, which the Knicks would gladly do. But at this point, the Nuggets are not considering offers for him. If Anthony steps forward and asks for it, Denver might have to consider dealing him or risk losing him for nothing next summer. The Knicks don't have enough room for a full max contract next summer, but they are close and can maneuver to create the space for it.

Anthony shares the same agent as James: Leon Rose. Paul just left his agency, Octagon, to become the most significant client for James' fledgling marketing and branding company, LRMR, which James owns with business partner Maverick Carter. There could be some obvious strategy here.

Paul recently told ESPN that if his team, the New Orleans Hornets, is not committed to building a championship-caliber team, he will seek a trade. It would be extremely difficult for the Knicks to pull off both blockbuster deals, especially anytime soon. But the fact that two star-level players have the Knicks in mind certainly will motivate Donnie Walsh to maintain flexibility with the payroll so that if those players do become available, the Knicks will be ready to strike.

No it's not. It's the flexibility plan. Just build a young team and whatever comes along now is fine and dandy. If it doesn't, oh well.

The media are the only ones pushing these names to sell papers. The Knicks have no shot at either Paul or Anthony.

for once we actually have a roster with the kinds of assets a team would want in a big trade for a star caliber player.

In the meantime we are definatly a playoff team. Anything less with this roster would be a huge failure

Lets not fall into this type of hype. Why does everyone like to be used, because that is what these players are doing. Just stick with the plan and continue to develop Gallo, Chandler and AR they are going to be very good. I know everyone is still dismayed by the LeBron debacle. But lets continue to develop these young guys they are ready for their next step in the progression ladder. I know everyone wants Gallo and Chandler to put up big numbers and they will give them an opportunity to do so. I like the Melo and Cp3 and all but I wouldn't put to much into players wanting to play here at the last minute they will back out. It is just fashionable to say NY and that is just what they are doing.

I for one am very excited to see how Gallo and Chandler perform this year, I mean we invested so much watching these guys play I would like to see how our investment turns out. I have no doubt that they will be very good next year. I'm talking 18-20ppg good.

I think AR and Gallo have high ceilings. I think Chandler is a nice rotation guy. Maybe a starter, maybe a first guy off the bench. I think chandler is a 15/7 in 30 minutes kind of guy. Can play both forward positions, even some SG. Good defender also. His handle, passing and limited court vision will keep him from being an all star kind of player. Maybe a notch below Jamison, which is pretty solid. Nothing wrong with that.

Now you think Randolph has a higher ceiling? Weren't you the same guy who was belittling his production at the end of the 09 season? What made you change your mind since he missed most of the 09-10 season? I mean that Gallo vs AR thread is still kinda fresh.

believe me, in the next 2 years those 2 guys are the only names you'll be hearing people talk about... & that won't be just the media, the fans are already talking nonsense saying stuff like "well i'd rather have Melo anyway, he's a better fit for the MDA offense" (the same Melo that the same people were calling a punkass for sucker punching Mardy 2 years ago) & "we can still make a trade for CP3 if the Hornets owners want to cut his salary off the books" to console themselves over losing out on Lebron.

i'm with you in building a young team & figuring out our next move later, that's really the only plan we can go after at this point after not being able to land the big fish we wanted to land.

I'm definitely going to be hawk-eying Gallo this year. He could really go off, and lead some defense. I feel like hitched his rebuild to his paisano in the draft so he should give Gallo the keys this year. Gallo vs Melo this year is a must-watch for me.
