"Amare is a vet. Turiaf is a rugged no-nonsense player. Gallo and Douglas show high leadership qualities.... Those guys you would think of are going to coattail ride the big teams this season. Watch the handful of washed ups that join the Heat. You know it's coming. JWill, QBitch, etc. Not that I'd want either of those two clowns in a leadership role but those are the types that are out there to be added.

I think we're best rolling with what we got. I like our kids. The only dope we might have that needs guidance is Anthony Randolph."

Cosmic - I submit that all dudes under 23 years old need guidance. What is most important is the desire to listen and learn. If there is a resistance, or self-centered stubborness, or negative behavior that repeats itself and plays out in poor decisions (on or OFF the court) over a period of time - yes, that person is a dope.

The infamous Chris Washburn immediately comes to mind

Whatever beef there was between Don Nelson and Anthony Randolph is in the past. The job of Mike D'Antoni is to assemble the new parts into a lean, mean running machine. The junior varsity gets their chance to audition starting Sunday.

I am willing to defer on the grades, predictions, projected win totals, shiftlines (although that part is fun) and comments by newspaper hacks until the introductions of November... and February, after they have gone through the trust building process of a 5 game in 6 nights West Coast swing.

The Answer Man told me last night:

The Knicks will be entertaining and much more fun to watch as a team... a team.... WITHOUT "he who can't handle Broadway" Who knows?...the first time Felton hits AR on the baseline and Randolph spins, soars over two dudes, changes hands and dunks the Spalding from a spot higher than the box painted on the backboard...the pinwheel roof of The Garden just may lift off it's hinges from the noise. Simultaneously, someone in celebrity row will have a beer spilled in their lap.

Somewhere, (hopefully) Bill Walker is on a nautilus machine.

I like the talent also. We have a playoff team that can grow over the next couple of years. We are one superstar short.

We also have more emphasis on defense as Walsh has been putting the parts together. I posted this on another thread...

Walsh has been adding defensive players who can also play offense.

Toney Douglas - defensive player of the year - ACC his senior year
Jerome Jordan - 3x defensive team - first string Center in his conference
Amar'e - better defensively than Lee
Anthony Randolph -outstanding blocks and runs the court extremely well. Plays hard at both ends.
Turiaf - 1.4 blocks/game career avg; playing 19 min/game
Felton - 1.4 steals/game career avg.

Markji - nice summary analysis of the defensive chops of the New Knicks. it would seem a major issue for D'Antoni and the Knicks is deciding how to deploy Gallinari on defense.

At 6'10 Gallo is somewhat a defensive tweener

Strong enough to body up against a center like Dwight?

Perhaps, but can he stay out of foul trouble?

Power forwards?

Perhaps, but that is the best defensive matchup for Amare

Skill forwards?

His height is an advantage but what about lateral quickness?

Tough call

Gallo is also good defensively. And smart. In Europe he played guard most of the time; brought the ball upcourt; and would guard the opposing team's best offensive player. The NBA players are faster, and Gallo has grown 4 inches. I think Gallo can guard SF pretty well. He's still young as is Anthony Randolph. They can switch off on SF and PF and Chandler can switch between SG and SF.

Eh- Gallo can deal with most 3s, which is where he will play this year unless his body has gone through some kind of transformation. I would have thought that his lateral quickness was not an issue at this point. He was guarding PGs last year on the perimeter because Duhon could not stay in front of a snail. Hopefully he will not be put in that role this year, but I don't see Gallo's D as any kind of an issue.

Having a good off the ball shot blocker like Randolph around will help a lot of guys, and as was pointed out, we now have a number of guys who can also play D.

By the way, don't forget that Azubuike, if he is healthy, is a pretty good defensive player who also has a good shot. This is guy is not bad- just hope he is back 100%.

Felton was a 4 years starter on UNC and has a championship under his belt. Two years with larry, who also installs those fundamental "Tar Heel" hoop DNA into every team is not a bad thing either.

Felton with a few years in the league should be ready for leadership and solid play.

The NCAA title he won was with a very unlikley group. See the roster:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004-05_North_Carolina_Tar_Heels_men%27s_basketball_team

Ray was the floor leader. The Pedigree of this team is much better than it has been for years.

We ahve to be patient with them. THis is not happening in starphuch manner!

I wouldn't compare Randolph to Washburn. Washburn had some pretty serious character issues off the court and a substance abuse problem. I beleive he got caught stealing a stereo from the athletic department at NC State. Randolph is just young and had the misfortune of starting his careeer under Don Nelson. I think Randolph will be fantastic. I do worry about D'Antoni's ability to mentor young guys as he did not seem interested last year. I hope this was discussed with Walsh as one of the ways he could improve his coaching or that he recognizes it. It may not be a stretch to think that developing Randolph correctly is more important than having D'Antoni as coach at this point. D'Antoni failed to lure the talent that was supposed to come play with him and to this point has not been effective as the Knicks coach in my opinion. If he isn't effective with this roster the Knicks as an organization need to move on.

i love the new knicks. they have the offensive chops to be a d'antoni running team, but all the gritty edge and defensive abilities to be a solid defensive unit.

i'd much rather build a team this way and watch it develop.

it's going to take some patience, but we still have cap flexibility to add a major piece sometime over the next year or two and we have the young studs to help us growth from within.

let's go.
