The Suns will make a pair of sign-and-trade deals as part of forward Amar'e Stoudemire's departure.

Phoenix will swing deals with New York and Chicago, netting a $16.5 million trade exception from the Knicks and using it as part of Hakim Warrick's acquisition.

Happy Waters, the agent for Stoudemire, told Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic of the sign-and-trades.

The trade exception of $16.5 million is equal to Stoudemire's first-year salary in New York and means that Phoenix would be landing a player like David Lee in return.

The Knicks are expected to receive a second-round pick and an additional $800,000 in cap space in the deal as they will be able to start Amar'e's contract at a lower price.

"We really did care about Robert (Sarver) and Alvin (Gentry) and the team and how we could help any way we could," Walters said. "It doesn't give Amar'e any more money. He actually takes a pay cut in the first year of $800,000. It gives them flexibility and hopefully it helps them in the future."

What exactly does that mean?

Walters said the trade exception the Suns are receiving in return for first signing Stoudemire to his five-year, $99.7 million contract with New York is for $16.5 million, equivalent to Stoudemire's first-year salary. That means the Suns would not be getting a player, like free agent David Lee in return.

Knicks get a second round pick and cap space. Because they are not sending a player the Suns get a trade exception. I think this is a credit to Donnie having so much cap space that the Knicks can take Amare's contract without having to send salary back. Benefitst both teams.

Enough to sign a player to fill in the roster later on, and you get a #2. Not bad.

Bottom line: would we still have the option to S&T Lee in the event this Lebron thing goes south (for instance - Lee to GS for Randolph & Turiaf)?

Yep. Knicks just took back from Suns. They are not sending anything. Cap space made this deal work.

Don't we have to take more from GS in that trade because they are close to full on their cap?

Randolph, Turiaf and Abuzuike make 9.3 combined. Using the 125% rule Lee's starting salary could be 11.6 in a S&T

That's what I thought. I mentioned that in the Lee/Randolph thread before...Was told no, but I suspect different...i know we have cap room but those guys are almost at the cap for this coming year ($55M and change)...Randolph & Turiaf make about $6M total this year -- Lee resigned should be in the $12-14M range I would think, if not higher considering what Boozer just got..Not sure how it would work..

No matter, as long as they reserve the right to still S&T Lee to get something done if this Lebron thing goes south on us, they'll figure it out...

This thread confuses me. Are we sign and trading Lee for Amare and a 2nd rounder?

They have some decent expiring contracts to add up so they can match what Lee would get.

If Turiaf is healthy, he is a good tough reserve who anyone would want, and I think he is also a leader, and although I have had fights with Briggs over Randolph, I can't deny that he has a ton of talent, unless his injuries are an issue.

The big question is if Lee would do the trade? Do we have any idea whether or not he would?

Nope. We get a 2nd rounder and 800,000 in cap space for going the S&T route.

The mechanics of the transaction still confuse me, but you can't question that both teams do well in the deal.

At this point I think Lee may just want to get paid,, esp. with Boozer just getting paid..He's worked hard to get to this point but the overwhelming interest in him doesn't appear to be there -- as far as I know, Minnesota looks interested but only has $7M in cap space...No way we take Al Jefferson back so I don't see that going anywhere. And despite what team Lee has said about being "impressed" with Minny in their meeting I can't see him wanting to go there...GS's a better destination for him than Minny I would think...Who else is interested in Lee though? Haven't really heard about any other team --- NJ maybe but have they made an offer or even scheduled a meeting to talk to him???

it makes Amare's first year salary 800K less and gets the Knicks a 2nd round pick.

By the way Bill Walker's option is 800k. So by doing this we keep a good young player we already like without taking a cap hit and get a 2nd rounder. Nothing not to like about this.
