If the Knicks wanted to go over the cap and sign three maxes, would this be allowed by the NBA and all we would have to do is pay the luxury tax on it? Correct me if I am wrong but werent the Knicks over the cap in years past?

Knicks can't sign 3 max they were over the cap all of those years because of the trades they made where players had long contracts and in each year the player earned more money on that contract pushing them well over the limit. Also the midlevel excepction played a role because you can use it if you're over the cap and the Knicks used it to sin busts like Jerome James and Jared Jeffries

You can go over the cap, but I think you can't sign free agents if you go over the cap. I'll await the more definitive answer from one of the site Mavens.
https:// It's not so hard.

The Knicks do not have cap space to "sign" three max players. They have cap space to sign two max players. You cannot go over the cap to "sign" max players. The exceptions to the cap rules that would allow the Knicks to get a third max player would require them to trade for that player using the trade exception. By trading approximately $13.5M, they could take back $16.85M in salary, (125% + $100K of the players the Knicks trade) to get a third max player. This would require the trade of Eddy Curry's contract and another $2.5M(either Gallo or Chandler and Douglas). They could use a trade exception to trade those players for a max player (if the other team was willing).

you cannot sign a player for more than the mid level exception if you are over the cap except for players already under contract for whom you have Bird rights
