Amar'e Claims Carmelo, Parker Will Join Him With Knicks

Jul 04, 2010 1:07 AM EST
Amar'e Stoudemire was in New York on Saturday night and talked about who might eventually join him on the Knicks.

"I've talked to Carmelo Anthony that he needs to come out here," Stoudemire said. "I've talked to Tony Parker. Both guys are ready to join me if I decide to come here. So we will see if we can work it out."

Stoudemire will meet with the Knicks on Monday.

"It's one of the most historic franchises in NBA history. It's a beautiful city. Madison Square Garden is definitely one of the most intriguing places to play. So they definitely have a few great points on their side."

He was non-committal when was asked whether he was disappointed about not returning to Phoenix.

"The organization of Phoenix has been great my whole career," he said. "I left my stamp on that organization as far as what we were able to accomplish. It was a great ride. So on to the next one."

Yet he's meeting with the Nets and another team on Tuesday, right... I guess as backups or so he feels like he's wanted by other teams? Knicks better lock him up by Monday night.

Yeah, that was my initial thought- it really sounds like he was told Lebron definitely isn't coming

Though you could ask why he's trying to recruit players who are already under contract- shouldn't he be approaching free agents who could actually sign here? Maybe Donnie told him about trades he tried to do but were rejected and Amare is trying to get the players to put pressure on the gm's to force a trade. It's odd that he's only mentioning players we can't currently sign. I hope Donnie's given him that task and said he'll handle the free agents...

who knows. i think amar'e is acting on his own accord when walsh mentioned players he's targeting...

amar'e knows joe johnson isnt coming without lebron. wade isnt coming. bosh is not coming if amare is here. lebron likely is not coming. c'est la vie.

Amare needs to sign on the dotted line first.

As to Melo? He is a better fit for D'Antonis offense. Melo can run and shoot quickly. LBJ cannot. LBJ would have been perfect for Pat Riley's offense.

So if this is what happens it's actually better for us I believe.

Parker can run, too.

Amare, Melo, Parker.

How do we get all three this summer? I don't think we can. We do not have the trade assets to do both. Only one. And in that one Gallo might be a goner. Chandler is a good asset to trade as is Curry's expiring but we're talking about trading for superstars here. Chandler isnt. Curry's expiring isnt. Gallo could be a star one day. So you know the trade convo starts with his name.

Melo would have to sign as a free agent in 2011 I think.

But, again, sign the contract, Amare, then we can talk. I also don't know why he's talking so much about this publicly. It's not the right thing to do. NBA frowns on teams and players talking about other players under contract in such ways.

How much leverage would Melo have if he demanded a trade? Surely there would be a three way to provide Denver some value.

MDA envisions Lebron as his point player, Anthony can't play that role.

If you have a Nash type PG, you can make a pretty good case that you would want Melo over James.

I would wait for Melo to be a free agent. He is going to be one whether or not we trade for him (If he is under an existing contract during the regular season, can you tear up that contract, agree to a new one, and then trade him?).

What if we were to trade for him and then lose him to another team next year because another team swoops in and makes a better offer?

I agree totally. That's a helluva top 3 right there and I think it may be doable. Three all-star level players IN THEIR PRIME, one a 3-time champion..Obviously, signing Amar'e is step 1 (apparently we may be pretty close here). Then there's a lot of factors that make me feel the two trades can get done:

(1) Yesterday on the other Melo thread I talked about two trade scenarios in-depth:

a) A re-signed Lee & Gallinari for Melo
b) Curry's expiring/Chandler/TD for TP

Thinking it over, I think we might have to re-allocate those resources to balance it out a little better. We probably can't include both Lee & Gallo in the same deal and expect to get both players. They're both our top assets, each would probably have to go in a seperate deal, not in the same deal. So if you got all-star D. Lee going in one deal, Gallo in the other, that might work better. Lee/Gallo is definitely enough to have a conversation with Denver, I can tell you that, but Curry/Chandler/TD may not be enough for TP at the moment (Douglas as a tradable asset worries me a little bit with each of these teams (Den & SA) -- Denver's backcourt is set with Chauncey/ Lawson and Smith/Afflalo at the 2 AND SA is OK at the point at least with Hill & Curtis Jerrells, a talented d-league PG they payed to stay away from other teams and to remain with their own affiliate...Not sure how it would work, balancing out all of our tradable assets to get both guys, but with Lee and Gallinari, I think we have a chance...Maybe an even better chance if we then can get a third team involved in whatever deal we may be light in...The beauty of this is that if we got Amar'e right now and couldn't work out a trade for either Melo or TP at this very moment, they're both FAs next summer -- then we have a chance to get them for nothing (which would require us to be patient and carry a bulk of the cap room over to next year and not blow it all on long-term deals for Ray Felton & Mike Miller). Does Denver & SA want to run that kind of risk? I don't know maybe they do, but logic would suggest that we could at least have some dialogue right now w/o anyone hanging the phone up on us -- that much I'm certain about....I think Melo & TP both want NY (esp. taking into account some of these Amar'e recruiting rumors we've been hearing and also this: while Melo has it pretty good in Denver, TP is in a bad spot in SA -- coach Pop gave George Hill the job last year when Parker got hurt and then he didn't get his job back when he returned. I think that infuriated Parker and I can definitely see why. I think Pop did Parker dirty there and no matter what Pop may have told him recently, TP knows what he did to him last year. This is one of the top PGs in the game that brought that city 3 championships recently...And that's how you treat him? He gets hurt and loses his starting role to George Hill???? What does Pop do now? Relegate Hill back to the bench after giving him the keys to the team last year? He may have already lost Parker -- if he does that, he may lose Hill as well. Point is I think TP may be in play here, no matter what anyone is saying.

However we can allocate the resources, you go after this triple-play hard right now as a solid Plan B and see what can be worked out. Hopefully that's what the Knicks are doing. There are rumors surrounding all 3 players and NY --- Amar'e, Melo & Parker...This trio instantly makes us very dangerous in a Boston Celtic kind of way..Hopefully the Knicks are engaged in a lot of different scenarios at the moment --- the LeBronathon, Amar'e, Bosh, trades for Melo & Parker, ALONG WITH keeping a close eye on all of the top SL/unsigned talent that's out there (being ready to pounce of all the top SL players out there is a big factor when it comes to putting together the underbelly of this roster). I hope that's not too much for Donnie given his weakened condition right now....We can't have our whole focus on Lebron --- it's a huge juggling act -- I think we have to be working on other things simultaneously as if LeBron's not coming...It's ambitious and a little complicated but to me, there's no better Plan B out there for us right now than Amar'e/Melo/Parker..

So is the 2010 plan now the 2010-2011 plan? Because there's no way we have the assets to get both Melo and Parker right now.

Maybe the Knicks sign Amare and give Miller and Ridnour 1 yr deals to see if they can help us get to the playoffs? Then enact the "plan" for next year.

Yup. Could be...Or maybe we overpay on one year deals for Mike Miller/Ray Felton...Who knows? Melo was always a big part of this in the event we strike out this summer. That's nothing new and it's an idea that looks better and better each day as it appears LeBron won't be coming here...And TP, an unhappy player that wants out of SA right now, would be a very good player for us, the more I think about him...

I like the way you think. But TP is not critical to plan B. If Lee plus Gallo can get Melo then you do that. I would hesitate to give up Galoo for TP. We could sign Felton instead to more reasonable contract. Not the same star power or the same level as TP but still not bad.
