The Nets are smart about this. Many of these teams will need to sign several min salary guys and they just started the process. Both of these guys will not only make the team but be able to contribute off the bench. Uzoh developed into a solid point guard with an emphasis on defense and not turning the ball over and Zoubek came into his own as a Chris Dudley type player who will go hard rebound bang and set nice picks.

The New Jersey Nets have signed free agents Ben Uzoh and Brian Zoubek, Nets President Rod Thorn announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not released. Uzoh, 6’3”/205, was undrafted out of Tulsa. The four-year senior guard averaged 13.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.1 steals in 141 career games, including 140 starts. Uzoh was named First Team All-Conference USA as a senior and Second Team All-Conference USA as a junior and sophomore. The Texas native shares the school record for career games played with 141, while ranking in the top 10 in school history in 11 categories, including points, assists, steals, rebounds and blocks. Zoubek, 7’1”/260, is an undrafted rookie center out of Duke. As a senior, Zoubek played in all 40 contests, helping the Blue Devils capture a National Championship while averaging 5.6 points and 7.7 rebounds on .638 (90-141) shooting from the field. For his career, the New Jersey native averaged 4.2 points and 4.5 rebounds in 133 games, which included started in 37 contests.

Wow, I just got done talking about these two on the Amar'e thread...Signed as in invited to SL or signed up for training camp with a chance to make the team, bypassing summer ball altogether?? Just curious - both were already part of their Orlando SL roster..Looks like the latter...Good move by Jersey..Smart. Why run the risk of other teams eventually swooping in with contract offers if you really like them yourself? Hopefully the Knicks follow suit...I'd like to see the Knicks act equally aggressive...There are quite a few players that I wouldn't even have to see play in SL -- I already know they can play and I'd ink them up on the spot..

Did the Nets have a mini-camp already?

I know we had both of them in. I thought we liked Zoubek, never heard anything about Uzoh.

I would have picked up Torrance and Randle for our SL team as soon as the draft was over.

Does Zoubek expect to be a permanent backup, by the way. Neither he or Lopez are quick enough to play PF. Assuming that the Knicks were actually interested in Zoubek, he would have an opportunity to play pretty decent minutes with the Knicks along with Jordan- surprised that he would come to a team to play with an established young center, supposedly a franchise center, who is all of 5 days older than he is.

With the undrafted FA centers that are slated to play summer ball, I like AJ Ogilvy the best.. Somewhere around 6'11"/7' 250+ lbs, he pretty big, he plays hard and has some nice offense skills. I think this kid is more skilled than Zoubek myself. I know Chicago invited him to be part of their summer league team...I actually think this kid could be something close to Brad Miller/Spencer Hawes/Nenad Krstic. Ogilvy/Jerome Jordan wouldn't be a bad 7 footer combination to add to our mix.

I just hope the Knicks have their eyes open and are looking...

Question -- if we wanted to right now, could we go out and sign a player that's already slated to play on another team's summer league squad? Anyone know?

We seemed to go after PFs- Garcia, Lyons, Washington. I don't really count Carroll- seems like filler to me, but who knows.

Hopefully there are some foreign players we looked at when Donnie and MDA went overseas who we invite in. I would like to have a few folks, under contract to the Knicks, playing for us in the DL this year. Have 12 guys travel with the Knicks and 3 in the DL, playing together on the same team.

Shved, the tall skinny PG, and Ohlbrecht (SP), a German PF/C once touted as the next Dirk (years ago), but now a question mark, are two guys I would like to see on our SL roster, if only to satisfy my curiosity about them.

I know that Zoubek is from NJ--maybe giving them the guaranteed contract[im assuming a one year with an option?] got the deal done. face it these teams are going to have to sign some of these guys and the Nets were just getting first dibs on the chase--not a bad move whether or not you like the players. As we witnessed int he playoffs--even thought they change the rules--the game stays the same--you need big players and a deep bench that you can use during the year to keep guys fresh for the playoffs.
