I don't think with the cap Washington could help the Knicks but I am not sure. The moves they have made I believe have improved them a lot. I think getting Yi was a great move for them. Apparently Yi is working out very hard this offseason and is gearing up to finally fulfill the potential he had when he was drafted.
Yi Jianlian and John Wall
Dan Fegan knows what he's doing. If you don't believe it, check out this move from yesterday. He basically arranged for the New Jersey Nets to send Yi Jianlian to the Washington Wizards for Quinton Ross. The move was all about cap space for the Nets, who gained $3 million of that precious commodity in the deal, but for Fegan and his star client it was all about getting next to John Wall.
Yi's NBA career started with the kind of fanfare that followed Yao Ming to the NBA. Unfortunately, Yao's meteoric rise didn't help Yi, who has yet to show the NBA world that he belongs in the big leagues. Good in China is one thing; good in the NBA is an entirely different proposition. Over the first three years of his career he's averaged 8.6 points as a rookie in Milwaukee, and then 8.6 points and 12.0 points in two years with the Nets. He hasn't been that impressive, especially for a sixth overall draft pick, making this year - the final guaranteed year on his rookie contract - a very important one for Yi.
This summer Yi has already taken step to raise the level of his game, convincing highly-regarded NBA trainer David Thorpe to take him on as a client. Thorpe only agrees to work with players who show the highest level of commitment, and so far this summer Thorpe has been impressed by Yi's determination to grow into the player many hoped he would be when he first came to the NBA.
Playing with John Wall is also expected to help Yi emerge as a player. Playing with All-Star point guard Devin Harris helped Yi's game a bit, though Harris was often injured. Playing with Wall, Yi's camp believes, will help him reach the next level, particularly with all of the work Yi is putting in this summer.
If Yi has a breakout year, Gilbert Arenas adjusts to playing the two, and John Wall lives up to his expectations, the Wizards could be one of the most improved teams in the NBA this season. They certainly need it after all of the injuries and drama of the last few seasons.
