Lance Stephenson fell through the NBA Draft, kept falling and falling right toward his hometown Knicks.

Then he fell past them, too.

The former Lincoln High School star was chosen with the 40th pick Thursday night, right after the Knicks made back-to-back picks at 38 and 39.

"I thought they (the Knicks) were going to pick me but I am just happy the Pacers picked me," Stephenson told ESPN.com. "I am going to try to be on the team and try to be a better player and try to fit in with the program."

The crowd on hand at The Garden Theater chanted Stephenson's name as the Knicks were selecting in the second round, but the Brooklyn native, who worked out for the team prior to the Draft, is heading elsewhere.

"Everything happens for a reason," Al Ebanks, Stephenson's agent, told ESPN.com. "I liked Indiana since day one. I thought it would be a perfect fit for him. There is a lot to be said about being a hometown guy playing for the hometown team. But everything worked out."

PACERS LIKE PICK

Stephenson, who played one season at Cincinnati after an up-and-down New York City high school career, is ready for the next step.

"It is great to have Indiana pick me up," Stephenson said. "I think I fit in great."

when i first read this article I thought it was just a 19 year old reacting/saying what normal teenagers say. I think it would have been different if agent came out and said it.

not sure what he said in this article that would have been interpreted differently had his agent said it.

I think the Knicks may really regret not picking him.

lincoln H.S. players so far have not had a successful NBA career so i can see why the Knicks passed on him.

maybe it was something in his perceived personality or character makeup that influenced the Knicks' decision... doesn't seem like the kid's lacking in talent... hopefully they don't make another mistake like they did with Brandon Jennings.

Dude's a 2nd round pick which means he has to make the team.. right?

When the knicks passed on artest, he was # 15 in the 1st round.. Jennings was # 10 in the 1st round.

Community picks don't come from Lincoln Highschool in Brooklyn, so there was no way we were picking this kid up.

MDA couldn't handle a hometown kid from NY and it's the same reason why Jennings in the lottery wasn't chosen by us.

I agree but I am getting tired of the guys being picked or signed being guys that he can handle and fit in his freak system. Both guys selected this year were 4 year players that met the character/compliance component that seems to be a prerequisite over talent and upside.

Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Just cuz MDA likes smart players without behavioral problems doesn't make him a bad guy. I'm glad he's looking for talent that is mature and coachable. I've had enough of dumb teams with selfish guys that have loads of talent and no brains. I want talent and brains.

DW wants players that can make the team and are mature. So he found guys that this coach can work with in year one and beyond.

This approach was tried before with Layden and it didn't work. A roster full of Shandon Andersons and Howard Eisleys is very easy to coach but you have to have talent and ability to win. The second round is where you try to find the gem as someone put it, not your summer league fodder. D'Antoni doesn't play or work with rookies anyway. He needed some guys that were coming in as finished products because he is not going to teach them. The bypassing of talent to fit the coaches needs is minimally very frustrating.

Hmmm...so Brooklyn is not part of our "community?"

Not Danphoney's community for sure.
