Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry is close to parting ways with the franchise less than two weeks after the dismissal of coach Mike Brown, triggering a dramatic reshaping of the team’s brain trust as it desperately tries to retain LeBron James(notes), league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

One source said it’s “very possible” an official decision could be announced as soon as Friday.

Ferry’s contract ends this summer. He had said after the Cavaliers’ second-round loss to the Boston Celtics that he would speak with owner Dan Gilbert to decide whether it was best for him to continue as GM. Ferry was disappointed about having to fire Brown, a close confidante from their days with the San Antonio Spurs. Gilbert had initially seemed open to bringing back Ferry, but sources said he ultimately expressed reservations about extending a long-term contract extension.

Assistant GM Chris Grant is expected to take over for Ferry.

so is lebron still calling all the shots in cleveland?

Just the timing of this and how it seemed like Ferry would be back, and now this news, worries me. Makes me indeed think LeBron is giving them conditions for his return and they appear to be meeting them.

from RealGM:
Despite reports to the contrary, LeBron James didn't play a role in Danny Ferry's decision to resign as general manager of the Cavaliers.

Ferry resigned earlier Friday. Cleveland fired head coach Mike Brown last month in the wake of their early playoff departure.

"#LeBron made aware of Ferry decision after it was made late Wed. High level sources: LeBron did not play a role in decision, he liked Ferry," Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer wrote on his Twitter page.

Windhorst also reported that James had no comment when asked about Ferry's departure.

No worries.

Truth is we really don't know. The only "sources" that would know are related to either LeBron or the Cavs organization, and both of those have a vested interest in making it look like LeBron played no role in this. LeBron doesn't want to look like the bad guy, Cleveland has no interest in making it appear that they are letting a player run the show either. The fact of the matter is, if LeBron really "liked Ferry" that much, he'd still be there. At the very least, he didn't push for him. And I cannot imagine the owner did not ask for LeBron's input

Or maybe the front office already knows Lebron is leaving and they have decided to blame it on Ferry for not getting him the second stud he needed to get over the top. Certainly the blame for that would fall to Ferry. If he had stayed as GM and Lebron walked, he would be fired. So he may be just taking the gentleman's retreat right now and moving on.

It's what I would do if the writing were on the wall.

That makes sense and could very well be the case too. I hope you're right

Update from RealGM:

The departure of Danny Ferry came about because Dan Gilbert was not willing to give Ferry the same control over the team as he had previously.

"This was about power," Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported on his Twitter page. "Ferry wanted same level as in 2005, with the stakes Gilbert didn't want to give it. So they parted ways."

Despite reports to the contrary, LeBron James didn't play a role in Ferry's decision to resign as general manager of the Cavaliers.

Cleveland fired head coach Mike Brown last month in the wake of the team's early exit from the playoffs.

"LeBron made aware of Ferry decision after it was made late Wed. High level sources: LeBron did not play a role in decision, he liked Ferry," wrote Windhorst.

Windhorst also reported that James had no comment when asked about Ferry's departure.

Ferry is a wealthy man with a good rep and a nice 5 year run. Cavs are pouched if lebron leaves and if he stays he can't do much with the roster than he already has.

Mike brown has done a good job but I can imagine Lebrons group wispering in Lebrons ear that its "coaches" fault you not advancing achieving that wonderful world of lebron were he can do no wrong. Other thing is when your GM and told to fire the coach its times to go. Ferry is no Layden and perhaps Gilbert with 5 years ownership experience is going Dolan on the franchise and wants more influence on running the team.

And Ferry, a wealthy man if he stayed would have to still live in Clevelend.
