That is TERRIBLE... I've always loved American Sports jerseys cause they were ads-free... I hate soccer jerseys, let alone euro basketball or hockey jerseys...

Look at that, that's the start of things to come... when will it arrive in major leagues like the NBA, NFL and NHL ?

Wait the damn advertisement is bigger and more prominent than the team logo?

I wouldnt trip just yet, WNBA is just trying to stay economically solvent at this point.

a Hooters ad i wouldn't mind, as long as it was the NBA dancers wearing them... the WNBA players don't really do it for me.

The ad is actually quite small compared to what you can see in Europe ! Beware guys, this might be a sign of tihngs to come... Can you imagine having something like "DORITOS" instead of "NEW YORK" in front of our jerseys ???

I'm surprised you guys aren't mad about that !

Do you hate what is on the jerseys or who is in the jerseys?

I watch WNBA games when I get a chance. I think being here in the south for 5 yrs has adjusted my appreciation for lower levels of sports. Down here local sports and minor leagues are takin much more seriously. The big rivalry here is between two high schools. The game draws over 10,000 people! That's amazing for such a small town. WNBA could be more successful in smaller towns that don't have as much entertainment comp tho I know that wasn't the intent of the league. They want the big city stature and TV markets.

I don't know what's more unimportant, the fact that this the WNBA, or if anybody cares that a logo is on the jersey.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

That's funny the Liberty are rocking Foxwoods, since the Connecticut Sun are Mohegan Sun's team. Rivalry!

I can see where French is coming from, since US sports is probably the last bastion for the ad-free jersey, but like said above, the WNBA gotta make that loot. I don't think this is a harbinger of things to come for the big 4 North American male team sports (baseball, football, basketball, hockey).

Liberty announces jersey deal with Foxwoods casino
By Zina Kumok, AP Sports Writer

NEW YORK — The New York Liberty will become the fourth WNBA team to feature corporate logos on their jerseys.
The Liberty and Foxwoods Resort Casino announced a multiyear partnership Wednesday that will include a jersey sponsorship.

The new jerseys will debut Friday as the Liberty take on the Connecticut Sun at the Mohegan Sun arena. Mohegan Sun is a rival casino to Foxwoods, North America's largest casino. They are based within 10 miles of each other.

The proximity of the two casinos helped spur Mashantucket Pequot Gaming Enterprises chief marketing officer Rob Victoria to consider the deal more seriously.

"It'll almost be like a Red Sox-Yankees rivalry," he said. "We're all for it."

Victoria said he also liked the Liberty's influence on New Yorkers.

"They really do carry a lot of weight in the city," he said.

WNBA president Donna Orender said the deal can only enhance the WNBA's attempts to promote itself as a possible business partner to other corporations.

"This validates and reinforces the fact that the WNBA is a tremendous business property that provides value to companies, and so we're thrilled with this announcement today and especially to have a company like Foxwoods aligned with New York," she said.

MSG Sports president Scott O'Neil said having corporate support is a huge aspect of professional sports.

"When we have partners like Delta and Coca-Cola and American Express and Foxwoods Resort Casino voting with their wallets and saying, 'The Liberty is a platform that can help drive our brand and drive our business,' absolutely it's a stamp of effectiveness for us that we're looking for," he said.

The jerseys say "Foxwoods" across the front, with a small Liberty logo above. They won't feature any other sponsors.

Victoria said the discussions with MSG initially only involved the arena and began in 2009. The addition of the jersey deal started around late March and was a turning point in negotiations.

Because women's basketball is so popular in Connecticut, Victoria said the jersey sponsorship was an important part of the deal. At first the Liberty deal was only an afterthought of the total package MSG was offering to Foxwoods.

"It was kind of a throw-in," he said.

Orender said other teams might form similar deals, with one or two teams signing with companies each year.

WNBA teams have been allowed to feature corporate sponsors on their jerseys for two years.

The Phoenix Mercury were the first WNBA team to announce a jersey deal, signing with LifeLock in June 2009. The Los Angeles Sparks also signed a deal last June with Farmer's Insurance, and the Seattle Storm followed in April with Microsoft search engine Bing.

These jersey deals follow the model of European soccer teams, which typically have several logos on their jerseys. O'Neil said NBA commissioner David Stern has said that corporate partnerships with NBA teams might come together within the next decade.

The Liberty are currently four games into the season, the 14th for the WNBA. They are 2-2 in the league and fourth in the Eastern Conference.
