Again a "sorta" season preview from FOX. http://www.foxsports.com/story/story.adp?contentId=190635
SportsTicker Oct. 29, 2001 11:45 a.m. By Chris Bernucca SportsTicker Pro Basketball Editor
COACH: Jeff Van Gundy (sixth season, 238-163 overall)
LAST SEASON: 48-34, third in Atlantic Division, lost to Toronto in first round
ARRIVALS: F Clarence Weatherspoon (free agent), F Shandon Anderson (trade with Houston), G Howard Eisley (trade with Dallas)
DEPARTURES: F Glen Rice, F Larry Johnson, C Luc Longley, G Muggsy Bogues, G Erick Strickland
SLAM DUNKS: C Marcus Camby (12.1 ppg, 11.5 rpg) proved he can play full-time center and has become the team's most indispensible player. That's because All-Stars Latrell Sprewell (17.7) and Allan Houston (18.7) are interchangeable at the 2 and 3 spots and give the Knicks a nice three-way attack. ... Anderson (8.7) will back up both spots and do it without sulking, unlike Rice, the man he replaces. ... Weatherspoon (11.3, 9.7) is durable and can offer needed help on the boards. ... F Kurt Thomas (10.4, 6.7) does pretty well for someone who has no plays run for him.
AIRBALLS: Last season, the Knicks had too many wing players. This season, there are too many point guards -- Eisley (9.0, 3.6 apg), Jackson (7.6, 8.0) and Ward (7.1, 4.5), who is the most likely to be moved. ... Camby already is hurt and the Knicks cannot win without him, because Felton Spencer (2.2, 1.9) is not the answer. ... F Othella Harrington (9.0, 5.2) -- perhaps the team's best post player -- may have trouble finding minutes. ... Houston has to justify his $100 million contract by being a leader rather than a follower and stepping up in big games.
IN THE ZONE: Whatever defense the Knicks play, they will play it well. Most of their players are solid defenders, so zone should be used only as a change of pace. They will still switch and rotate and double down and step out with the best of them. Aside from Jackson, many of the ballhandlers are not good decision-makers on the move, which could hurt against a zone.
OUTLOOK: The Knicks made nine straight conference semifinals until last season, but those days are over. They have sold their financial soul looking for a championship and now are leveraged against the escrow tax unlike any other team. Their personnel still is not a good fit and they could be looking at another first-round exit.
