Hey all,

This summer, I'd like to plan a one-week baseball trip for myself, and need your advices and opinions to make it happen.

After checking out all the different options and asking for advices, I've chosen to make the following trip :

- Washington (1 NFL preseason game vs. Ravens - 3rd preseason game where the starters play at least half the game)
- Baltimore (1 game vs. Texas, August 22)
- Philadelphia (2 games vs. Houston, August 23 and 24)
- Washington (5 games, 1 vs. my rivalry team, the Cubbies, and 4 vs. my favourite team, St. Louis, August 26, 27, 28 and 29)

In order to limit expenses, I'd like to book my plane tickets from Paris to Washington, then travel between those cities by train. During that trip, I'll try to do an many things as possible during the day (sightseeing, monuments, museums, ...), then enjoy the games at the ballpark.

Now I have two options :
- cheapest flight (630€) round-trip to Baltimore (BWI), arrives late on Saturday (miss the NFL preseason game) and leaves early on the Sunday (miss the last Cardinals game)
- more expensive flight (710€) round-trip to Washington (IAD), arrives at 4pm on Saturday and leaves late on the Sunday

If I take the more expensive flight, I might be able to go to the 3rd Redskins NFL preseason game (the one where they play the starters at least one full half), which is scheduled at 7:05pm. Since I arrive 3 hours earlier at IAD airport, is it conceivable for me to get to the Redskins stadium in time, or is that wishful thinking ?

Besides, the flight back homes leaves at 6:40pm, meaning I could go to one more baseball games without having to book one more night at the hotel. The Cardinals, my team, play the 4th and last game of that serie on the Sunday, at 12:35pm. It looks like that might work too !

What do you think ? Wishful thinking or crazy schedule that might just work ???

I’d arrive at 4pm at IAD, take a cab to my hotel in downtown Washington (near a station to go to the ballpark). I then take a metro to the Redskins game at 7pm.

Then, back to the hotel, one night, and leaving early for a train to Baltimore. I leave my stuffs at the hotel, then go to the stadium for the afternoon game. I spent the rest of the day there, one night in Baltimore, and take a train to Philly on the Monday.

I stay there two days, attend two games, back in DC on the Wednesday, where I have the rest of the week to visit. I’d attend all 4 Cardinals games played at Nationals Park in late August, and thus wold have a great chance to see Carpenter, Wainwright, and even maybe Strasburg…

Then, hurry to take a cab back to IAD airport to fly back home…

In 9 days, that’d be 8 baseball games and 1 NFL preseason game, but this is the reason why I’m doing this trip

thats a very very cool trip. I would scratch the preseason football but thats just me :)

There are a lot of trains between the cities but not all the sights and stops are train friendly. Have you considered renting a car? Its only a few hours between Wash/Balt/Phili and there is a lot thats just more accessible via car. Just a thought.

I thought about it, but I wouldn't be very comfortable driving abroad. I almost never drive in France even though I have my licence.

I think I might just go for the cheaper plane tickets, and go directly to Baltimore (BWI airport). I'd miss the preseason game but it might be hard because I don't know how much time I'll spend going through customs and waiting for my suitcase anyway... That'd also save me a train ride early Sunday morning...

That'd be 7 baseball games in 3 cities, and 3 games with my favourite team. I'll also have plenty of time during the day to visit those cities, take pictures, visit monuments, museums and such, ...

Since I'll go on my own, I'm not interested in going to bars and clubs (I'm getting married next year !), so spending my evenings at a baseball game is just perfect for me :)

I agree about preseason football, it's just not that special. If you're paying for entry, I'd go sightseeing instead. Even though the starters play, it is still just evaluation mode. I'd also say that the Orioles are a pretty awful team this year, not sure if that matters to you as far as AL baseball goes. The NL games look solid, though.

I'll get to see the Phillies play one of my division team, the Astros, the the Cubbies against the Nationals, and my own team 3 times... Ideally, I'll see Wainwright, Carpenter, and Garcia, our lefty rookie, but 2 of 3 wouldn't be bad ;) I might also catch Strasburg in one of the 4 games I'll see at Nationals Park.

Is there anyway you can fly into Washington Reagan/National airport? That may appear to be the most expensive option, but from there you are connected to all the mass transit and will save more time than if you go to BWI. Dulles is a decent cab fare into DC.

Anyway, I used to live in DC and was reporter for SportsTicker out of Camden Yards, so if you have any questions feel free to ask

BWI is the closest to Baltimore, so I could just go there with the light rail. If I don't go to a game on my last day, I'll have plenty of time to go to the airport, so I could catch a bus going to BWI. There aren't many planes going to DCA, and they are way mor eexpensive actually.

BWI is the one I talk in my first option. IAD is the second option.

BWI is pretty far away from DC so just make sure you have plenty of time to catch your return flight... also Camden Yards in Baltimore is a beautiful ballpark, but the city itself is pretty sketchy so be advised... Philly's pretty ghetto too... Nationals Stadium is nice too & the Navy Yard metro stop lets you out a half a block away from the entrance to the ballpark so you should have no problem getting there.

If there is a bus going from DC to BWI, I should be fine. I'll take option 1 and enjoy my time. Being constantly in a hurry on a trip isn't the best thing to do !

I'll be in Baltimore for one day and a half, two days in Philly, and 5 in DC. I hope to take great pictures of the cities and at the ballpark.

To Fish's point, if you get a car, you may be able to stay outside city centers, and thus able to save money that way.

As far as not being comfortable driving, don't worry, most people here don't know how to drive anyway so you'll blend right in

since your hotel is in downtown DC, i think you'll be fine... you should allot 1 day to check out the sights like the Washington monument, the Capitol building, Lincoln Memorial, Smithsonian, White House, etc. while you're down here if you have the time... it's a lot of walking but there's plenty to see so it's not too bad.

I don't know the bus options... but there's two train options, the MARC and Amtrak. For $7 on the MARC you can get a one way between Union Station in DC to BWI. For $8 on the MARC you can go between Union and Penn Station in Baltimore. Union Station is also part of the DC metro system. On the weekends (and weekdays for that matter), you can take Amtrak, but it's more expensive and I've never taken it between DC and MD.

If it's way more expensive then, yes, don't go to Washington/Reagan. You do save a lot of time flying out of there (DC mass transit is remarkably easy to use) and save commuting costs... I'm unsure about international flights, but for me Dulles and Reagan ended up costing the same once cab fare is factored in.

I would definitely recommend against renting a car regardless of nationality on vacation in DC. DC and its greater metro area has some of the worst and most frustrating traffic in the USA. It's vacation and no one should be subjected to that type of crap on vacation.

Even if you go to DC from NY, it makes more sense to take the Bolt Bus or something like that. Last second it is $25 roundtrip, booked far enough ahead it's $1. That is significantly cheaper than gas and tolls on 95. You don't have to deal with parking and can just get around on the subway/,etro systems

I'll have to make the following rides during my trip :
- from BWI to Baltimore : light rail
- from Baltimore to Philly : AMTRAK ?
- from Philly to Washington : AMTRAK ?
- from Washington to BWI : bus ?

What would be the best options for each ride ?

- from BWI to Baltimore : light rail yes, as long as you get there before it closes
- from Baltimore to Philly : AMTRAK ? yes
- from Philly to Washington : AMTRAK ? yes
- from Washington to BWI : bus ? no, I'd also take Amtrak... they share the same commuter rail with the MARC... it's more expensive than the MARC but it's also less expensive than taking Amtrak between cities

just did a quick search on kayak.com for flights for dates:

august 21 - august 29

flying from paris to new york.

i found nonstop flights for $1191 US but flights with 1 stop for $752 or (total trip time about 9 1/2 hours).

that way, you can see some stuff in new york too as the yankees are home that sunday august 22nd and the mets are home all week.

but if you want to go to DC for the whole week, there are a ton of cheap busses to washington dc - for under $20 US round trip - bus ride is about 4.5 hours.

just some ideas.

I would def recomend catching the yanks game in nyc as well and I was going to suggest taking the bus between cities. Itd be like 15euros.

Check out megabus.com as well as boltbus.com - if you book it early enough, you can get tickets for as cheap as 1 us dollar!

That sounds like an awesome trip though

I went to NY a couple of times already, so I'd like to visit new cities this time around. Even though they might not be the most exciting, they're part of the American culture and I am very happy to discover this part of the East coast. Besides, I'll really enjoy the games. I'm really looking forward to it :)

Thanks for your advice, I'll book my plane tickets early tomorrow.
