http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/66832/20100527/walsh_to_begin_searching_for_gm_after_free_agency/

According to two sources, Knicks team president Donnie Walsh intends to begin a list of general manager candidates in late July/early August after free agency is over.

Walsh is long overdue for major hip surgery.

Knicks senior vice president of basketball operations Glen Grunwald, a leftover from the Isiah Thomas regime, has one more year left on his contract, but Walsh does not appear to view him as his ultimate successor.

LeBron James could have major input in that decision if he signs with the Knicks, but former Warriors GM Chris Mullin, who is tight with Walsh from their Indiana days, seems a natural fit and long has been considered a candidate.

Hey Fellas,

In My opinion, I think walsh should look at Kiki, former knicks player, former Nuggets GM and recently let go from NEts. He should be able to do a good job now since Donnie will eventually retire.

Sam Presti, another GM would also be a good choice but he's not leaving the Thunder team. Chris Mullins, local guy isn't too bad either.

whats your input on this???

i wouldn't mind giving the job to chris mullin. i thought he did a nice job building that team around baron davis - who unfortunately left in free agency and never should have.

i'd also look to see who sam presti's assistant in oklahoma is.

I see GM's with mixed results as not a bad thing. THEY LEARN!

Many times we see young guys eventually get it either as a coach or executive. Joe TOrre had mixed resluts with Atl and Mets then became a god with the yanks. At first glance his hire as a yankee I thought was kind of nutty but look how it turned out.

GM's are no the end all to personel moves and Walsh will have a heavy hand in any event. GM's run the day to day of the club. Walsh has a life time of experience as an exec and I trust he can spot talent.

Kiki or Mullin would be fine by me. I prefer Mullin because he like Isiah is a good drafter who needed to learn NOT to pay certain guys.

Mullin did some excellent drafting in Golden State. He's a NY guy, like Walsh. I think he'd be a good fit.

I wonder if World Wide Wes will get an interview for the job?

Mullin signed some awful contracts. Fisher comes to mind. No way I want him.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

I like Mullen alot.

Here's the good:
drafted Biedrins #11
got draft picks for Dampier to Dallas
traded junk for Baron Davis
drafted Monta Ellis 40th pick
drafted Anthony Randolph #14
signed Anthony Morrow

And the bad:
gave big contracts to Fisher, Foyal
drafted Patrick OBryant #9
traded JAson Richardson for draft rights to Brandon Wright
Gave Cory Maggette a big contract

He did a good job adding some good young talent to that group. NY guy. I like him. Shrewd

i can't even blame him for giving those bad contracts out since he was trying to go for it all around baron davis. patrick o'bryant is a swing and a miss, but alot of gm's swing and miss on big men. he did ALOT more good than bad.

I'm cool with Chris Mullin. I like how Golden State is able to find these NBDL players at midseason who can contribute. I just hope whoever comes in just completely fires EVERYONE from the Isiah Thomas regime.

That's a weird take. I like his drafting skills but where is giving Mike Dunleavy Jr. max money on your list? Good or bad? I guess the good was that he found a suc..er..friend in Donnie to take that off his hand. Bird still cleaning up the best made downlow mess that is the Indiana Pacers. I don't see anyone saying let me get some of that contract anytime soon.

Dunleavy got 5 years and $44mm. How is that a max contract? As I recall he was playing pretty good ball no?

When does Bird get any blame for anything? Dude is the team president for Christsakes.

Unless your Mitch Kupchack, Buford, or PResti there are few GM"s that warrant instant consideration. Even Colangelo got some bad marks on him .

All GM's make mistakes.

Regarding Golden State Mully had a lame year where he was not in charge of anything. Owners have a lot to do with contracts on some teams. Some of Mully's bad might not be on him.

All Gm's make mistakes!

ANytime I see Dunlevy play the knicks he sure looked like a player to me!

maybe it's weird because you got your facts messed up

he got a 5 year 44mil deal.

In November 2005, the Warriors signed Dunleavy to a 5-year, $44 million contract extension. Golden State General Manager Chris Mullin said,
