Dirk Will Opt Out Of Contract

May 22, 2010 3:37 PM EST
According to Marc Stein of ESPN, Dirk Nowitzki will not take the final year of his contract.

The Mavericks will try to retain Nowitzki and reach a new contract before July 1. But with that date approaching, it is now likely that the Dallas All-Star will join this summer's high-profile free-agent class.

"We're going to do everything we possibly can to make sure Dirk is a Maverick for a long, long time," Donnie Nelson said.

Sign and trade Lee and Curry's expiring and Chandler to Dallas for a signed Dirk and Haywood.

C. = HAYWOOD
PF = DIRK
SF = DANILO
SG = JAMES
PG = Whoever can defend and hit the open jumper

Picture 3 7footers, a 6'9 LBJ and a speedy PG who can defend and shoot the 3

The Mavericks are not doing a S&T unless Dirk demands out of Dallas, which I don't see happening. We do have an advantage because I was reading an article and it appears that, due to his age, we can offer Dirk a contract that is only $3-$4 million smaller than the extension Dallas can offer. Thus, it will not be a money thing. Essentially, if we get Lebron, we might be able to convince Dirk that moving to NY would give him the best chance to win. However, as a practical matter, why sign a 32 year Dirk to team with LBJ. We would be much better getting a Bosh and then building up the pieces to make a championship run.

except Dirk might be a better fit with D'Antoni - he can shoot the three as well as work in the post, pick and roll.

He is in a way, David Lee, but older, slightly bigger with an outside shot.

Dirk
LBJ
Danillo

That is a mean looking front line that can score from just about anywhere on a team- it is younger & maybe better than what Boston is starting up front.

I'm not sure why Dirk would do a sign and trade. He can't sign a 6 year deal with Dallas anyway.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Dirk, Lebron, Gallo? Who plays what position? Someone like Bosh would score 60 on us.
TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

Position isn't really that important when you have players with such great overall skills. I'm not saying we should do this, but if we did those guys can cover multiple positions, so it doesn't really matter who they cover on the floor from 3-5. You can then have TD and Chan and that's a long group defensively.

i would love to have dirk and said it before, like last year. however, cuban will NOT let him go without a fight. dirk will be loyal and stay or at the very most have them do a sign and trade with cuban demanding much.

If Dirk wants to get back to the finals, then he should try to hook up with Lebron, preferably out east vs. the west.

I've never been a fan of Dirk Nowitzki. He's a very good player but he's one of the biggest Playoff chokers I've ever seen. Plus he's already 32 years old. Much rather have Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire or even Carlos Boozer.

how are you a 'playoff choker' when over the course of 103 postseason games you are averaging 26pts and 11rebs on 46% shooting?

Easy - Lost NBA Finals up 2-0, lost to the 8th seed Golden State, lost in the 1st Round this year and last year.
