Ref DeRosa suspended without pay

ESPN.com news services

NEW YORK -- NBA referee Joe DeRosa was suspended without pay Thursday for throwing a ball at a fan who appeared to be heckling him during halftime of Tuesday's playoff game in Orlando.

DeRosa, 53, will miss the next game he would have been scheduled to work.

At halftime of Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals between the Magic and Boston Celtics, DeRosa was walking to the scorer's table to collect the warm-up jackets for his crew.

A fan behind the table approached DeRosa, gesturing with his arms and appearing to be shouting at the veteran official. DeRosa flipped the game ball to the fan -- identified by the Orlando Sentinel as Franz Hanning -- who tossed it back.

DeRosa motioned for Hanning to be ejected by Amway Arena security. Hanning was not ejected, the NBA said in a statement. According to the Sentinel, Hanning was relocated to another seat in the capacity crowd of 17,461.

The Sentinel said Hanning did not return calls for comment. According to the newspaper, he released a statement Wednesday that read, "As many people in Orlando know, I am a huge fan of NBA basketball and especially my home team the Orlando Magic. I think the NBA officials do a great job. I'm looking forward to the Magic going to Boston and evening up the series."

Hanning is the president and CEO of Wyndham Vacation Ownership, the newspaper said.

Personally, I think Stern missed the boat and sent a horrible message. I have a good idea what his reaction would have been if a player did this to a fan and something tells me it would be a lot more than one game. Seems to be bit of a double standard going on. Who policing the police issue with me. And I also wonder if Del Rosa would have been punished at all if ABC announcers didn't call him out on the matter on National TV.

I disagree... he flipped the ball and tried to have the guy ejected. It was wrong and he lost a game check. Players would have gotten the same. Maybe a 2 game suspension and fine? But it certainly wouldnt have been a game check. If your making $10mm in the NBA and lose a game's pay its $120,000. Not the paltry $20k fine they would have gotten. Thats like a parking ticket for me.

Taking the guy's game check was pretty stern IMO

I think it's ridiculous that this made the news, he just flip the ball to a fan who was a little over the top. It's not as if he threw it like he was playing dodge ball, there's was no malice in a simply toss, and the dude didn't think nothing of it.

shouldnt matter. cant have the "law" of the nba acting like anus hats and then riding players for any perceived faults with fan interactions.

nba refs' are supposed to be (sort of) part of the floor. They are not supposed to impact the game or even acknowledge fans unless they get out of line. Then, the signal c-cypher-power
the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt

Aren't suspensions for players without pay. I remember Sheed went nuts when they put in the 7 Tech rule because that is a game suspension and still you have to pay a fine on top of it. So a player would lose $120,000 and still have to pay the $20,000.

BTW, Davis got hit hard for just going into the stands. I think it was like 6 games or something. I remember it was a lot because the Knicks were upset about the decision.

He didn't want to make an issue out of it because he didn't want to lose his seats which the NBA could have done in their review.

Players don't get paid for the playoffs.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Were talking about a guy that went 7 rows up into the stands to confront a fan compared to a ref making a friendly toss of the basketball at a fan, who in return toss it back in a friendly matter...

IF they were joking would it have mattered

Friendly? He tossed it at him and the fan threw it back. Then the ref motion for him to be kicked out the building. I would hate to see how he treats his foes.

So since he is getting paid, the fan has the right to heckle him? I did not see anything wrong with what the ref did. They make it sound like he beaned the fan "White Goodman" style.

so the next time you are talking to a client, throw a stapler at them and see what their reaction and your bosses reaction is.

Different venue though. Could it be that the ref flipped the ball to him to tell him if he thinks he can better then go ahead and he can do it? I have gone on design meetings and told a client/colleague if he think he can do better then he can design it himself.

I thought the punishment was appropriate. He didn't throw the basketball at the fan with the intent to harm the fan, but he also should have never done it in the first place. 1 Game is appropriate IMO.
