Ah yes... nothing beats a pasty white guy like myself mouthing the words to Straight outta Compton at his local YMCA

Post work:
Fishy heads to his local YMCA for a good lift before ending the night with meat and ale.

Tragegy strikes!!!!!

NO IPOD.

I'm desperate for my mid-week psychic enema. Lifting some hard weights, plugging into some rock and roll at volume 11 and forgetting all that undermines my serenity (work, exwife, traffic, isergio). Im there, I'm ready and no music. Exasperbating (rhymes with masterbating) the situation there is some song playing and I'm pretty sure its Belinda Carlisle (sebstar knows her). Im phucked. I express my discontent to one of the kids who works there. He offers to loan me his ipod. He's got reservations though... he names some of the tunes on the thing. I dont know any of these people he's talking about. I say "they all sound like angry black guys."
He says "yea... pretty much."
I saw you got any NWA on there?
He says yea.
I say Straight outta Compton?
He says who has NWA and doesnt have that?
I say dish it... and Fishy's work out is SAVED (and so is the day)

Now its been a some time since I listened to this album, but I instantly remembered why I loved it.

The rhymes are classic... from me and Lorenzo rollin in the benzo to a brother who will smother your mother to when I'm called off, I gotta a sawed off... you get the idea.

But the real brilliance? Its not about racial angst translated into rhyme. Its the back tracks. This is not regurgitated pop riffs played over and over. This is a keyboard, a bass and an electric guitar throwing out some SICK funk and soul. Yea... go back and listen to it. That could have just as easily been Marvin Gay singing to that as EZ mother phuckin E.

So I got the blood flowing and I am LOVING this stuff. The rhymes are the rhymes but 5 pints after my workout meal and I am looking up the tabs and playing them on my Les (Evil where are YOU??????????????)

But this leads to my point here. We live in the media capital of the world and our radio stations SUCK. I listen to CLASSIC ROCK because Led Zep still beats all the malarchy out there. I have to listen to a band called 'niggers with attitudes' from 1989 to be inspired to look something up that gets me out of my box.

This cant be soooo. Tell me it isnt. Tell me there is something beside Lee Dewize on Idol doing something interesting out there. Hendrix is dead (Marv... not sure you knew this). So is Layne Stanely (RIP).

Whats good people? Whats on your ipods? Whats in your glass? (DogFish head 60 minuts IPA for me)

talk to me people!!

I'm too busy to fish through the media spoonfed soilent green we are fed over the airwaves. Who's playing nasty stuff? Who's mixing genres that arent supposed to be mixed? Who's doing something thats gonna make my blood stir?

Those of you currently listening to Belinda Carlisle (DJ) or Hall and Oats (Nalod) can pass on this.

Wilson... pass me some of that funky stuff.

here's a rock album and a rap album. both are among my favorites from the past decade.

mclusky - the difference between me and you is i'm not on fire (2004)
http://www.mediafire.com/?nmzth0hw2eh

el-p - fantastic damage (2002)
http://www.mediafire.com/?jdmmywmawjy

also, speaking of mixing up genres, girl talk does a great job of mashing up songs from everywhere - he's basically like a dj on speed. takes a minute to get used to, but if it clicks for you, it's really good. great workout music for sure:

girl talk - night ripper:

also, one more,

fish, first off.. you should be goin for that dogfish head 120 minute. now THAT will get you going.

second of all. if you're a big fan of layne stayle then obviously you like alice in chains. don't laugh but the new album the band put out with the new singer is actually really good - if you haven't given it a listen, i suggest you do so. another rock album worth listening to is the solo album that slash just put out. he has a different singer on every song and the album is pretty damn good, i would suggest checking it out.

third of all, if you are looking for some good hip-hop, check out jay electronica. dude is amazing and no he's not one of those "angry black guys" lol - he doesn't have an official album out yet, but he does have a few mix-tapes. he really is going to be a titan of rap by the time he's done. if you're a fan of the west-coast i would say you should definitely check out the game. he's come a long way since when he first came out and he actually puts out some pretty good west-coast **** right now. you might want to check out some of the old west-side connection (ice cube, WC, mack-10)

Actually not looking for hiphop at all. I never really liked it.

Just looking for something GOOD.

Sorry Fish, I can't help you. I still listen to EPMD, Eric B and Rakim, Pete Rock and CL Smooth and the Biz. I gave up on music a long time ago.
I just hope that people will like me

Got to dig deeper. There's a ton of good music, just not so famous, perhaps because record companies don't wanna make them famous. It sucks more if you live in NY, because there's no more KRock.

Thats what I have on my mp3. Late 80's -early 2000's. Theres some decent stuff here and there but not much. That new Nas/Damian Marley cd is nice. Its different but its pure music.

I listen to the Arctic Monkeys - not sure if thats your thing but they are pretty talented. If you love classic rock then the British music scene is where it's at.

As far as rap goes - the commercialization of it totally ruined it. I really miss the good old days of East Coast vs. West Coast. Nobody realized how good we had it. I know there is probably some great underground stuff but I haven't been exposed to it.
