Chaney: Don't give
up on me, Isiah

Promises playoffs if he gets to stay

By FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Fans may want him fired, but Don Chaney remains Knicks coach.

Don Chaney is running out of chances, but not hope. The embattled Knicks head coach vowed yesterday that if Isiah Thomas gives him a reprieve, he will reward the organization with a playoff berth.
"I think if I have a chance to finish with this team we'll be in the playoffs," Chaney said. "It would be very disappointing if I'm not here to share that."

Chaney's job is in jeopardy again after Thursday's embarrassing 111-79 loss to the Houston Rockets. The Knicks fell behind 23-2 in Stephon Marbury's Madison Square Garden debut as a Knick and never threatened. "Fire Chaney" chants, which have been heard several times this season, reverberated inside the building as the Knicks were dropping their fourth straight game and fell to 14-23 overall.

Thomas, the Knicks president, left the Garden late Thursday without making any comments and declined to make himself available yesterday to newspaper reporters. He is, however, making the rounds with the electronic media.

In the past two days, Thomas conducted interviews with ESPN, NBA Entertainment, TNT and WFAN and has even scheduled an appearance on "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Tuesday.

Who knows? Maybe Thomas will deliver a state of the Knicks address Monday on "Live With Regis and Kelly."

His silence on Chaney's status yesterday, however, was deafening.

Tonight's game against Milwaukee at the Garden is not a win-or-else scenario for Chaney, according to people close to Thomas. However, Thomas has already demonstrated that his patience with the Knicks is as thin as a waif-like supermodel.

At least two Knicks players said last night they are "worried" that Chaney could be days away from being fired.

If Chaney is terminated, Thomas could stay in-house and promote one of Chaney's top two assistants, Brendan Malone or Lon Kruger. Thomas hired Malone as head coach during Toronto's inaugural season.

Thomas is said to be making a list of potential outside candidates, including Mike Fratello and Doug Collins. On Thursday, Thomas had a long conversation with Fratello, who was in town to broadcast the game for TNT. Pat Riley, Chuck Daly and Doc Rivers are, for various reasons, longshot possibilities.

Of course, the most logical choice would be Thomas himself. He coached the Indiana Pacers for three seasons before being fired by Larry Bird. Thomas enjoys coaching and is confident enough in his abilities to hold both jobs.

"Whatever the decision he makes, he has to do his job," Chaney said. "I have a job to do, too. My job is to get them ready to play. I don't have any excuses. I know just from being in the league, when you bring in new people there's an adjustment period. I'm a realist.

"He has to make a decision based on patience or no patience."

Chaney still has the unwavering support of Garden chairman James Dolan, who has rewarded the coach with three contract extensions since Chaney replaced Jeff Van Gundy 25 months ago. Three weeks ago, when it appeared that then-president Scott Layden was considering firing Chaney, Dolan instead fired Layden. In the past two years, Marcus Camby, Latrell Sprewell, Antonio McDyess and Charlie Ward have been traded and three assistant coaches have been fired.

Chaney, however, continues to defy the odds despite compiling a 71-111 record. He won't be able to survive many more lackluster performances. In Tuesday's loss at Cleveland the Knicks were outscored 22-3 to close out the first half. Two nights later, with the crowd in a frenzy over Marbury's return, the Knicks were outscored 23-2 to start the game.

Van Gundy's team was better prepared and played with more passion from start to finish. The Knicks, after falling behind 54-37 at intermission, inexplicably came out flat in the third quarter, and eventually trailed by 23, leading to cries for Chaney's head.

"They pay their money to come see their team," Chaney said. "They have a right to react any way they want to. We didn't play well. If we don't play well that comes down on me because I'm coach."

The Knicks' three-hour practice yesterday was more business-like than usual. The mood, dare we say, had a Van Gundy feel to it.

Afterward, Chaney met with Thomas, who had watched the practice from his office. When asked earlier if he felt Thomas was running out of patience, Chaney said: "He hasn't given me that feeling at all. I think he understands that we have new people. He has pressure on him, too."

That bastard Chaney just HAS to go- there's no question about it. He just doesn't give a damn.

He has a WHOLE lot of nerve to call the fans- who help pay his ingrateful-ass salary- fickle.

Quoted from today's NY Post:

"[The fans] pay money to see our team," Chaney said. "They can act the way they want to. They have a right too. When we don't play well, everything comes out on me. I don't react to the fans. They went after Patrick Ewing and that was unjust. Fans are fans. They're very fickle."

Nobody was dissing Patrick. The fans' anger was directed at CHANEY, and with good reason.

Not only should he be fired, but someone needs to throw a goddamn beer in his friggin' face. Or maybe a D-size battery...

If he was half as snotty to his players as he is towards the fans, Maybe his players would play harder for him and he'd have a better record than the PITIFUL 71-111 one he has now with this team! He not only needs to be fired, but straight-up needs his ass kicked.

Thomas says he has confidence in Chaney

By CHRIS SHERIDAN

NEW YORK (AP) — Isiah Thomas says he still has confidence in New York coach Don Chaney, though it took some prompting to get the Knicks president to say so.

The Knicks brought a four-game losing streak into Saturday night's game against Milwaukee, two of the losses coming since Thomas acquired Stephon Marbury from Phoenix.

"We have a responsibility to try to be the best and to keep moving to be the best, and Don's confident that he can do that, the players have confidence in him, and my job is to sit back and evaluate and see where that process is going," Thomas said.

Only when asked if he, too, had confidence in Chaney did Thomas say he did.

The coach's job status might have grown more shaky when the crowd at Madison Square Garden chanted "Fire Chaney" during New York's 111-79 loss Thursday night to the Houston Rockets. Thomas soaked it all in from what has become his usual spot, standing just behind the scorer's table at midcourt.

"Sports is a bloody business," Thomas said, "and every man has dignity and pride and self-respect about himself. You know, he's got a wife, he's got kids, and that (chant) is not a pleasant thing."

Chaney has compiled a record of 71-111 since taking over as coach of the Knicks in Dec. 2001 following Jeff Van Gundy's resignation. His career coaching record is 336-493 in 12 seasons.

The Knicks entered the game against the Bucks with a record of 14-23, in fifth place in the Atlantic Division and 10th in the Eastern Conference despite the league's highest payroll.

"To me it's not that hard," Chaney said. "I have to win games, and he has to make a decision eventually in terms of what he's going to do."

Assistant coach Brendan Malone, who was Thomas' assistant in Indiana and coached under Thomas in Toronto, has been mentioned as a possible successor for Chaney.

"We know what the situation is, and I also don't want to lead anyone to the conclusion that Isiah is going to name me head coach," Malone said. "It could be somebody outside the organization, it could be somebody inside the organization.

Thomas made one curious statement during a meeting with reporters when he said no one in Knicks organization ever said the team had to make the playoffs this season.

In fact, Thomas was sitting right next to Cablevision chairman James Dolan at Thomas' introductory news conference almost three weeks earlier when Dolan said the team "must" made the playoffs, emphasizing the word "must."

"We're getting started, we're moving, but we're a long way away from where we want to be attitudinally, culturally, everything else," Thomas said. "We've added a piece, but make no mistake about it, we only added one piece. We'll keep building and moving from here."

OK NY beat Milwakee tonight to improve to 15-23, 8 games under and 5.5 games behind, Milwaukee. The Bucks are 20-17 now and 5th in the EC. They have a rookie coach and a rookie PG. They are very young team as well.

So my point is that this is how bad Chaney is. The guy has had a vet team the whole year and still got nothing done. There is no reason NY's record should be so bad. I contend CHaney cost them 5 games, which would make them 20-18 instead.

A REAL coach would've had this team at .500 at least before the deal. A REAL coach would have NO problems making the playoffs with this group.

FIRE HIM NOW!
