If any UC fans were still harboring hopes that Lance Stephenson might change his mind before Friday’s deadline and return for a second season next year, they can forget it. Stephenson, a 6-foot-5 guard from Brooklyn, has hired New York attorney Alberto Ebanks to represent him as the June 24 NBA Draft approaches, which means there’s no turning back now.

Lance Stephenson Sr., via text message, referred all questions about his son to Ebanks, who described himself as the family’s long-time attorney.

“He’s working real hard,” Ebanks said today. “He’s excited about everything going on now. He had a great experience at Cincinnati. It was a big decision, a tough decision for him to make to move on.

“He loved it there. He had an opportunity to go away from home, to leave Coney Island and to meet new people in a really nice environment, which that campus is, surrounded by quality coaches that care about him, out of the big light, which is what he wanted. It was a very tough decision not to go back to that. It was a very welcoming environment.”

Asked why Stephenson changed his mind after twice declaring near the end of the 2009-10 season that he planned to return to UC for another year, Ebanks said Stephenson would answer that question when the time was right.

“I’m sure when he’s not in the middle of having very busy days like he is now that’s something that he’ll address,” Ebanks said. “It wasn’t on a whim. He gave the subject real consideration and felt this was the best decision.”

Ebanks said Stephenson is currently in Las Vegas training at Impact Basketball, which describes itself as “the premier destination in the world for teams, professionals and student-athletes looking to improve their athleticism, strength and basketball skills.

Run by founder and president Joe Abunassar, its web site lists as its alumni such players as Kevin Garnett, Chauncey Billups, Tayshaun nce, Dwight Howard and Ron Artest, and Paul Pierce.

Stephenson led UC in scoring as a freshman last year, averaging 12.3 points to earn the Big East Conference rookie of the year award. But he struggled with his perimeter shooting, making just 21.9 percent from 3-point range, and committed a team-high 81 turnovers.

Ebanks said Stephenson is one of 45 to 50 prospects who have been invited to the NBA Combine in Chicago scheduled for May 19-23 and is in the process of scheduling individual workouts with various NBA teams.

“This is a kid that really, really wants it,” Ebanks said. “He works extra hard and he’s self-motivated. I think he’s really moving in the right direction.”

NBAdraft.net projects Stephenson as a possible late-round pick but more likely a second-round pick.

“I think he’s going to surprise a few people and I’ll leave it at that,” Ebanks said. “Just based on all the information available to me and conversations I’ve had, I think he’s going to be OK. It’s not an exact science. We’ll know on June 24 whether he did the right thing or not.”

If he slips to the 2nd round we need to grab this guy. Attitude or not he is a talent.

"Attitude or not he has talent."

No I know why you loved Isiah so much.

It's not "screw everything else, he has talent". We've made that mistake too many times. We have to get high character guys in here, especially after years of bringing in malcontents.

Bill Walker had "attitude" issues coming out of Kansas which is why he fell to the 2nd round.

Seems some have a short memory.

We are talking 2nd rounders here. His contract wouldn't be guaranteed anyway. We aren't going to get ideal players with talent in the second round. I see Stephenson ass a watered down version of Larry Hughs. So if we can get that for less than a million for 3 years then I say that's great value.

He should stay another year or two in college.

Weak perimeter game, lots of turnovers... the kid needs some seasoning.

yeah, that statement that Pal gave is usually the fans POV.. nba gm's gush at potential and i don't think stephenson will be any different. i will say that he improved by leaps and bounds as the year went on though...
