Hey old-timers! Just read an essay in the Times that recalls the Knicks getting their first championship in 1970, in the context of war and protests & Kent State violence and whatnot. Pretty interesting:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/02/sports/basketball/02araton.html

So any of you guys who were alive and lucid in 1970, I'd love to hear about where you were, if you heard Marv's call or had "early cable" (I didn't even know there was cable back then), any cool old school details for us New Jacks.

Let's hope we'll all have our 3rd championship stories soon!

The author himself ended up asking this question on the Times NBA blog:

15 at the time. Always pissed off that I could not see Game 7 in real time on TV, although I was used to Marv Albert and the radio, so I enjoyed the victory. Stayed up to watch it on tape delay (don't remember what time, or even if it was on the same day as the actual game), and then I proceeded to fall asleep after about 10 minutes, or so.

Was more excited by their victory in Game 5- where they had to get it done without Willis. Don't know how many years it was before I finally got to see the driving reverse that Stallworth made against Chamberlain, a shot which probably got the biggest cheer of that game, if I remember correctly.

And amazing couple of years for me as a young fan, as the Jets, Mets, and Knicks all won their first (and for the Jets, only) titles.

this was the reason why marv albert was and is very special to the winning knicks era..my father and i listened to game 7 on a transister radio in the kitchen..hearing marv describe the action especialy pregame, hearing the crowd go crazy..he painted a picture with his words..listening him say "here comes willis" and then describing his pre game shooting.."wilis with his left hand from 15 YES" crowd going crazy in the background..then the game begins and wilis made the first 2 shots of the game..it just felt like we couldn't lose..then walt frasier taking over the game..im getting teary eyed thinking how great it felt..then dad and I watched the game on ABC on tape delay at 11:30Pm after the local news which spent 95% of the news on the Knicks..the next day i was floating on air in my high school..and i didnt have to smoke a joint

was 8 at the time but the buzz got me on to the knicks and my love for hoop.

Also "Alcinder" coming in the league was big and 1971 run to the finals against Earls Bulletts was epic. Earl tore up clyde which prompted a trade a year later. Clyde could not stop Earl.

nobody could stop the pearl back then..clyde was a great team defender not great one on one..that 1971 eastern conf championship against the bulets was very upsetting since wilis reed was only center in league who could handle alcinder..the bucks could never beat those knicks..and the knicks were so close as bil bradley missed a 12 foot baseline shot for the series win against the bulets that he makes in his sleep

We traded Mike Riorden, a 12th round pick, Dave Stallworth and Cash for Earl. Earl was ready to bolt for the ABA and few teams could afford to pay him. We did.

Earls first seaon was not that great but it started to come together in the playoffs and the knicks made the finals.

His best years were in Baltimore where he was young and his knees not so tender. He flat out lit it up!

Marv Albert beginning and finale call in last seconds of Knicks 1st NBA Title went like this.

"The big question is will Willis Reed play tonight"
"Here comes Willis the crowd is going wild !"

"Barnett to Reed in the forecourt rightside from 20 jumps "YES!!!" Willis has hit on his 1st two.

"Stolen by Frazier down the lane with a floater ..GOOOOOD !"

"Debuscchere holding the ball over his head" 8 seconds, Debuscchere holds the ball 5 seconds,
Debuscchere holds the ball 3 seconds, Debuscchere holds the ball its over.

"The NY Knickerbockers have won the 1969-70 world championship of basketball! "

Papabear Says

I was at 2 of the championship games. I was a very young record producer just in college. I was making lots of money back then plus a fine chick on my arm. Those were the days.

Papabear when he was a Babybear! A record producer in 1970? Man, that must have been an amazing time to be in the industry.

I was at the Garden for some of the Knicks-Bullets playoff games during spring break in 1970 but back at college during the Lakers series.

What I remember about Clyde vs Monroe, and this was 40 years ago so the memory may be a little fuzzy, was that at crunch time, Monroe would go one on one against Clyde. (No zone defenses). The other 4 Bullets players would move into the left corner and Monroe would be at the top of the key with Clyde on him. Clyde did a great job in stopping Monroe from driving to the hoop. As the shot clock wound down Monroe would put up these incredible turn around or fade away jumpers with Clyde all over him....and yet, all net. Totally in the zone/unconscious, and couldn't be stopped.

I only heard parts of the Laker's series as I was also participating in peaceful war protests/candlelight marches. You can't "Kill for Peace". (title of an old Fugs song.) Clyde's performance in game 7 is, IMO, the greatest single clutch game of any Knick ever. When everything was on the line, with Reed hurt and not the go to guy, Frazier stepped up and did it all. 36 points, 19 assists and 5 steals against Jerry West, a HOFamer and probably the best guard in the 60's, nicknamed Mr Clutch. LA had a seasoned team that had been to the finals every year, with 3 HOFers (Jerry West, Wilt, Elgin Baylor). I know all the sportswriters give Willis the credit for the win by coming out and playing hurt, and he deserves some credit for the inspiration, but it was Clyde who won/dominated the game.

I like the fine chick on yo' arm part !

$$$ money helps especially in College. In College (two) I had no chicks and I DJ'ed,
meaning I had fun but too many of them were after too many other things and loved $money more than the DJ.

Plus if chicks got in my way during a mix, I'd have to have them kicked out DJ booth I could care less how fine or pretty, foxy they were
DJ wasn't going to let them ruin my mix OR the power of the perfect beat!

I recall the 39 pt , 19 assist game think I was just entering Junior high
It was great Frazier my alltime favorite Knick player

I was fortunate enough to meet Clyde, speak with him and have him sign pic's and my jersey when he showed up at
corporate hotel symposium few yrs ago to speak.

That was the magical year and God's (played by George Burns in O' God) last Miracle. All 3 NY teams went thru Baltimore teams to win. The Baltimore Orioles(1969) and the Baltimore Colts(1968 - 69) were two of the greatest teams of All-time and considered unbeatable.
