The Houston Rockets just waived this guy on Friday and brought up Alexander Johnson (I really wanted the Knicks to take a look at Johnson but I digress)... What do you guys think? Do we pick him up right now and then keep him in mind for training camp?? I don't know what the hell happened to this guy but at one time not too long ago, he was considered rather promising. Drafted 12th in '06, he was a late bloomer at UConn that played behind some good players his first 3 seasons before finally getting some decent burn & finally excelling during his senior year..I haven't seen him in awhile but from what I remember of him at Connecticut, he was a dynamite shot-blocker that was pretty athletic at 6'11" and a lot more skilled offensively than what you might think (from what I remember, Jimmy Calhoun wanted him close to the basket for garbage offense and for rebounding and defensive purposes but he actually displayed a real nice looking jumper with some deep range on occasion). I remember a game in Detroit his first season in the pros for the NO Hornets (I think it may have been his first ever start) where he got significant PT that night & looked dominant offensively (running the floor for dunks, quick and effective one on one offensive moves on the block, pretty turnaround jumpers in close, etc..) but it seems like ever since that game he's gone downhill...After that, he never saw much quality time behind David West and then C Tyson Chandler and hasn't seen any time since on the couple of others teams he's been on. Could this guy be the shot-blocker we've been looking for? Earl Barron's played well but Armstrong's younger, has better defensive skills, might be more talented overall & I think he'd come cheap..

Here's a nice lengthy clip showing some of what he can do on both ends. We're probably not talking all-star here but I betcha if he got the same amount of playing time as Taj Gibson's getting in Chicago right now, he'd be putting up similar numbers (Taj is getting over 26 min. a game for the Bulls; Armstrong has only averaged 12.5 mins. per for his career for 3 different clubs. I think the two actually have very similar skill-sets...Pretty simple for me -- the guy hasn't shown much in the league so far because he simply hasn't gotten the playing time. Nobody seems to wanna give him a shot...I like him - he's far from a scrub imo...Taj Gibson, even higher thought-of guys like Jordan Hill, Tyrus Thomas -- there may not be that much of a difference between these guys and Hilton Armstrong -- he just needs the time to prove it. These guys are playing and producing - Armstrong's not even in the NBA right now. That's the difference...This guy just needs to play. I think it's obvious that he's got something to offer on both ends of the floor...I say we go get him now for peanuts and go from there..6'11", young, shot-blocker, quick, crashes the offensive glass, runs the floor, can post up & has nice touch on the ball in close out to mid-range. Intense but a fairly quiet, subdued kinda guy as well - he's not the type to cause problems (never caused any problems at UConn as far I as know)...I say go get him. We have the room - let D'Antoni take a look for himself up close in his system. Even if he didn't get into any actual games, maybe he comes in and shows something in practice against David Lee, Earl Barron, etc...Why the hell not?

on a 10 day contract why the hell not? doesn't make much sense to be playing D Lee the last few games anyway & risk him getting injured before the summer free agency blitz.
After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

I think we should approach everything very deliberately at this point - I wanna see us take our time on decisions and do everything in an A before B style leaving no stone unturned in the process. That's why weeks ago I started calling for Donnie to bring up some of the top D-League performers and give them a shot. It's obvious the season had been lost at that point -- with everything we need, why not tryout a few of these NBDL guys and see if they could plug some of the holes & on the cheap too?? Why not try a very productive D-League big like Dwayne Jones and see if he could've plugged a hole at center, why not see if hungry & aggressive Alexander Johnson could've had a role as a big forward in this system, why not see if talented lefty Curtis Jerrells could've been an NBA PG and a guy that could've split duties up with Douglas for the rest of this year and beyond (I didn't know Jerrells already had something cookin' all along with SA until recently -- point is if he were available, we probably wouldn't have shown any interest in him anyway)? Now I can't go too crazy here because they did manage to find this guy Barron and he's playing well but the move came way too late in the game and I still think there may have been better guys to call up anyway...Now it's obvious we need to add some kind of shot-blocking element to the mix here -- whether we find that with a vet player that'll cost us some money or a role player we can either draft or find cheap somewhere (my preference), I think it's important. Maybe not the top priority but it's important..I'm so tired of the swiss cheese defense already -- it's embarrassing and it needs to be addressed..At this point in time, unless that element's coming as part of a solid overall veteran's package (a real difference maker provided we upgraded the rest of the team accordingly), I'd conserve the money and try to find a young guy on the cheap that could supply it and I would've starting looking for it already...My thing is, why even use a 2nd round pick on a guy like Jarvis Varnado when we could bring in a guy like Hilton Armstrong and take a look at him first? Makes sense to me.. Again, A before B...Armstrong just became available last Friday - if it were up to me, knowing my team's weaknesses moving forward, Armstrong already would've been wearing a Knick uniform...

I look at Armstrong as a guy who's had a very similar road to the NBA as Jordan Hill. Hill put up the better numbers his last year in school over what Armstrong did but both guy's excelled their last year in college without showing much the previous years. Then when they both first hit the NBA, they both weren't given the time initially to prove themselves early on but did manage to show flashes. Now Hill's getting the time for his new team and he's producing...I'm not saying Armstrong's as talented as Jordan Hill, he probably isn't, but my point is, when you're not given a chance, you can't show your worth...Jermaine O'Neal wasn't ever given a shot in Portland early on, mostly because they had a successful veteran team at the time and didn't have the minutes for him..Once he got traded to Indiana however he got the PT & blew up and became a very good player. Again, I'm not calling Hilton the next Jermaine O'Neal, but let's pick him up right now for next to nothing and see what he could do for us. We've got nothing to loose...I'm intrigued by him -- I liked him in college. He could come in here in the limited time remaining with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder and something to prove. His back's really up against the wall right now - he'll be playing for the rest of his career. Take a chance. Maybe we catch some lightning in a bottle here..
