The New York Knicks Friday signed center Earl Barron of the Iowa Energy.

Barron joins 78 current NBA players with D-League experience.

He has appeared in 47 games, all starts, for Iowa this season, averaging 16.2 points, 10.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 31.7 minutes.

Undrafted out of Memphis in 2003, Barron returns to the NBA following a three-year stint with the Miami Heat between 2005 and 2008.

In 82 career NBA games with the Heat, Barron averaged 4.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and 13.9 minutes.

Alright now. I'm telling you this guy is better than advertised. He's active around the basket and he'll be the first center we've had in ages that actually has the pride and the work ethic to stay in shape. And no, i'm not talking about the power forwards we've had standing in for the last 3 years. I'm making the call now, he'll stick and surprise because he's hungry and actually has some skill.

I don't see this guy playing at all for D'Antoni no matter what the roster situation.

Darko has put up good numbers in Minny and he has gotten better with playing time same for Hill in Houston. Those guys never had a chance with D'Antoni. My guess is Baron doesn't have a chance either unless Walsh forces him to play him.

I won't deny that that might indeed be a possibility. Nevertheless, I predict if given an opportunity he will show flashes (as several of our power forwads have shown) despite Mike D's class management issues.

Crushalot, Who the hell cares about Darko? I can understand complaints about Hill, but don't give me Darko as some example of MDA not playing a guy that should play. He never showed enough energy and hustle for my taste. I never got the feeling he really wanted it. I don't care if he's putting up numbers on the lousy team he's on now. What does that really prove?

Junkmein, do you have a little scouting report on the kid?

Darko's embarrassing Knicks run is bookended by his stays in Minny and Memphis where he was a solid contributer. The evidence is there if you want it.

To further that point, Kurt Rambis must be a better coach that D'Antoni- he has been able to get production out of a player that MDA was not able to motivate.

Earl Barron is 1/14 from three in his career so he can't play here. But he's 7 foot and only has 12 career blocks so Mike D'Antoni might let this go!

Nix, were you sitting in on practices because there is no way in hell you got that from his playing time on court.

The guy is nearly a 30 YO back up C who plays weak in the post on both sides of the ball. He has some skills and has shown some glimpses of good play in the NBA--so giving him another shot is fine--where is the downside? That being said don't expect too much.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Well the main thing you'll find about Earl Barron is that he's actually very active around the basket compared to most stiff 7 footers. Offensively he's not the most skilled as far as post moves are concerned but he does have a jumper out to about 15 feet. Keep under consideration that it's been 2 years since I saw him with Miami and even more since his time at Memphis State. Of course I still have to agree that the coach may not play him despite some 6'10" scrub on the other team having a career night on us.

Hey I'm not gonna rip the guy, he looks like a fairly active 7 footer, but seriously, was this the best big to bring up from the D-League?? This was the best we could do? You got 6'11" Dwayne Jones leading the NBDL in rebounding and triple-doubles (and going for almost 18 ppg and 1.77 bpg as well) and you got strong/active PF Alexander Johnson going for over 20 & 10 (I thought the idea was to replace a banged up Al Harrington in the lineup - Johnson seems to be a more suitable replacement -- but then there's Al playing last night, so who the hell knows anymore)..Just going by the numbers because I don't know much about Barron, he doesn't even seem to be a shot-blocking presence and to me that's what we need most right now -- just look at last night's debacle in Golden State --- same old story - we manage to score some points but leave the front door wide open and roll out the red carpet for opposing players to come right in and score at will. No resistance at all. It's really been sickening to watch all year, thank God it'll be over soon...Jones & Johnson are about 2 years younger than this cat and more productive. WTF - If you're gonna call up guys from the D-League, go get the best. Golden State calls up the NBDL's leading scorer in Reggie Williams, San Antonio goes to great lengths to secure & stash away arguably the D-League's top PG, Curtis Jerrells, and we get......wait for it.....wait for it.....Earl Barron!?! Journeyman center extraordinaire...Hey even if they don't like Jones and Johnson for whatever reason, fine. Go get me the premier shot-blocker in the NBDL then (Wisconsin's Greg Stiemsma - 3.5 bpg in only 27 mins. [6.1 per 48 mins.]) and see if his defensive skills can translate to the NBA...There's a ton of guys I would've looked at before this dude: there's a young 6'11" shot-blocker named Mickell Gladness that's very intriguing, a 6'10" shooter/rebounder that's similar to Gallinari I like named Rob Kurz, I like 2G Mike Gansey, etc... I don't know man -- if they're not interested in bringing up & investigating the top guys available or at least guys that have some specialty-type skills that we could use, guys that may actually fit & wind up sticking, then don't even bother you know? It's like they make moves to bring up guys at the end of the season and then to put together their summer league squads with little or no thought behind them, while other teams always manage to grab all the diamonds right from under our nose.

we needed a shotblocking big & we bring up a 7 footer that doesn't block shots... makes perfect sense to me.
