I'm reading stuff in this forum about how D'antoni is just an offensive coach. He doesn't coach defense. This is the same received wisdom we've been hearing since the days of his 60 win seasons. This is a guy who probably would be walking around with an NBA ring if not for the refs hating Robert Sarver and allowing Steve Nash to be beat up against the Spurs a few years back. You all know the bloody incident i'm referring to, and it has come out since then that the refs had it in for Sarver.

So if he would've won that Championship, I guess he would be a good defensive coach? P'uhhlease.... Give him the horses, then judge the man. We got nobody on this squad who defends.

and defense in the same line puhleeze, have you watched the final four lately? Well coached teams knocking off superstar teams, give him the horses... How about working with what you got.

the Suns only managed to win 1 game vs. the Spurs in the '05 WCF... they got dominated by a team playing tough, physical defense & a slower paced offensive game... the Suns had a stacked roster full of thoroughbred horses but still lost because they could not stop the well coached, defensive minded team the Spurs had... yes, the Spurs had Duncan, Manu & Parker, but Amare was putting up some insane #'s that season & was playing as dominant as any bigman in the NBA, plus the Suns had the league MVP Nash playing at his best, All NBA Shawn Marion, Joe Johnson & a buncha good role players like Barbosa, Q Rich, Jim Jackson, Bo Outlaw & Voskuhl... that is a much better supporting cast than Horry, Bowen, Brent Barry, Tony Massenburg, Rasho Nesterovic & Nazr Mohammed.

so what horses can we get MDA to win us a title that will be better than what he had in Phoenix? unless we get Lebron & Bosh this summer, i don't see any way the roster will trump that '05 Suns' squad.

Yes, if he had the horses, Dantoni's knicks would be playing better. But the fact is that the horses he has are not playing to their capabilities. That = coaching issue.

He did well with a group of guys anyone wouldve done well with--give him props for playing a greta style with thise guys but the odds of putting a young shawn marion J Johnson Stoudemire Barbosa and Nash on this team isnt happening. That got away with no two bigs because S marion plays like a 4.

This is what I am scared of--getting MDA players--whatever that is and they sck and were stuck again for years and our pocks are gone.

Three thing I have learned about MDA over the last two full years. He does NOT get the most out of his talent for whatever reason--he seems to have a very volatile relationship with a number of players and his hair stays in place no matter what he does without the help of gel.

Hmm...I guess everyone already forgot the job he did in 2006, helping the Suns get to the Western Conference Finals with no Amare, no Joe Johnson (went to Atlanta), and no Kurt Thomas (brought over in Quentin trade but was injured). If you think that is not a great coaching job (getting within 2 wins of the Finals) then I don't know what to say. Does anyone remember the phantom calls that were going against the Suns in that Laker series?

Also, Joe Johnson missed first 2 games of the 2005 Western Conference Finals with his eye injury. Not sure why people were surprised that a battle-tested team like the Spurs were able to beat the Suns in that series. Fast forward to 2007 though and the Suns were more poised to beat San Antonio except oh yeah...they got screwed by the NBA again. Hell, Tim Donaghy was an official for one of the San Antonio wins in that series.

NBA refs had it in for Sarver, they got nothing against Mike,

what horses do u think he needs to win us a title? just curious... he had plenty of horses in '05 that was easily championship winning calibre & he didn't get the job done.

You really think that his team was better than the Spurs at that point without Joe Johnson? Yeah that's easy. Take a Suns team that was a flat broken shell the year before and then in one season expect that team to beat a Spurs team with World Championship caliber Big and experience, and beat them with your top SG out the 1st 2 games.

And if Don Nelson had defensive players, his teams would also play defense, right? Please. Mike D'Antoni cannot and will not coach defense. There have been countless quotes from his former players on how D'Antoni didn't coach, teach or demand defense. Fact is D'Antoni doesn't care much about defense. His system is to run and gun and outscore the opponent 130 to 125. That's why his big men never attempt to alter, block a shot or even foul to prevent a lay-up or a dunk. It's all about staying out of foul trouble so you can spend all your energy on offense.

I feel like even if you do think that the Suns should have beaten the Spurs in 2005 (with an injured Joe Johnson), you still have to admit that Mike can coach based on that 2006 season.

I mean, he didn't have Amare and lost Joe Johnson to free agency and still took that team to within 2 games of the Finals. What a lot of people forget is how big of a role D'Antoni had in developing Diaw too. Boris Diaw went from being a filler to the Most Improved Player in the NBA. To me, that 2006 year cemented Mike's status as one of the better coaches in the NBA. I mean people keep saying Skiles is a great coach because of what he has done with the Bucks and he certainly deserves the praise but come on, he also has players that fit the style of play he wants to see. D'Antoni had that in 2006 too and he got his team to overachieve just like Skiles is doing this season. If you give D'Antoni players that will succeed in his system, he will deliver. I think he has demonstrated that much...people have short-term memories unfortunately.

2005 Spurs
Duncan - 2005, All-Star, 1st Team All-NBA
Ginobili - 2005, All-Star

Seems to me that the Suns had just enough talent as the Spurs if not a lot more. If you include Joe Johnson and Q-Rich's career year. Not to mention Barbosa coming off the bench for them. The Spurs had Parker and Horry as the next caliber guys on that year's team. None of those players earned honors that year though.

at the end of the day, if you're a knicks fan, do you really care about what he did in pheonix?

so worry about he's doing with the knicks franchise and take it from there.

i don't question his ability to coach a great roster... i question whether his style of play will ever translate into championships regardless of the roster he's coaching... i haven't forgotten the job he did in Phoenix, i remember it quite well.
