LBJ's future from Melo's eyes.

I had an interesting conversation with Carmelo Anthony regarding which team LeBron James will play for next season.

Me: "If you're LeBron, do you go to New York for the money and the fame?"

Melo: "He's already got that. He's already got the money and the fame. I think the only thing weighing in right now is the championship."

Me: "You know him better than a lot of people (and share the same agent and shoe company) — is the championship the deciding factor for him?"

Melo: "If he feels that he can win a championship in Cleveland, then he will stay. The team in Cleveland is that much better than the team in New York."

Me: "Has he already made a decision?"

Melo: "No. Not at all, not at all, not even close."

I guess we can strike out Melo on the 2011 wish list. Dude sounds like he wants to chase Kobe for the quest of the rings. Kobe reminds them all the time. Kobe chasing Jordan and Magic. The thought of Lebron leaving a championship caliber team must confuse the hell out of a guy like Russell.

Russell played in a completely different era... there's a ton more at stake in terms of dollar amounts, commercial marketing value & all the rest in this day & age of free agency... i don't think u can assume he wouldn't be considering the same things Lebron is if he came up in the modern day.

I don't know he was asked once about the difference between him and Wilt and he said the desire to win. He said it was more important to him than money and fame. He pretty much lived a humble life. Some guys are built very different. His teammates and opponents including Wilt described him as being insane about winning. He didn't care about stats.

"It wasn't a matter of Wilt versus Russell with Bill. He would let Wilt score 50 if we won. The thing that was most important to him was championships, rings and winning," said former teammate and Hall of Fame inductee, John "Hondo" Havlicek.

now compare that to Lebron expressing himself.

I don't think anything is wrong with it but I do think that there are some guys who don't care about the fame part.

you guys ever read "the rivalry"? best book on nba history i have read. its clear that what we think of "modern" players isnt new. wilt was just like the spoiled players of today and he got his start 50+ years ago. reading on guys trying to get raises by having nice stats and coaches pointing out: are you clutch, can you play d, etc... as much as the times/people/teams have changed, many of the skills/lessons/themes have not.

hard to tell if lbj follows russell or wilt -- i kinda hope wilt jsut a bit cuz if its russell, i dont think he leaves.

GO TEAM VENTURE!!!!!

Hey gun to my head, do I think LeBron's leaving his hometown winning team to come here when they can guarantee him that 6th year? I'd have to say no, though I remain hopefully. As a Knick fan what other choice do I have?? I'd like to believe that NYC has a lot to offer and I'll remain optimistic until he tells us no. I'd also like to think that if LeBron comes here, ALL BY HIMSELF he'll transform this team into a winning team. Bam, overnight...No waiting period, right away as soon as he walks through the door -- then it's only a matter of filling in around him properly to give him the best supporting cast we can give him. A few of the pieces are already here - Gallo, Chandler, TD... As soon as he got here (if we were lucky enough), you don't think Donnie could then go out and get him similar parts to work with like he has in Cleveland right now?? With LeBron in place added to Chandler, TD and Gallo (all of whom would become much better players playing next to this guy right away - they're already pretty good but he would bring out the best in them), you don't think Donnie could go out and find Anderson Varejao, Mo Williams, JJ Hickson, Boobie Gibson and even Antwawn Jamison & past-his-prime Shaq O'Neal equivalents out there to fill in around him?? Man I do. The plan here appears to go even a step further than what he has now and right off the bat -- it looks like we want to get LeBron ALONG WITH another star player in his prime and have them come TOGETHER this summer. F me man, but I think that's a pretty solid plan to try to lure him here. Right now, as good as his team is (and it's good), I think we could supply him with a comparable if not an even better team in year 1. Definitely by year 2...I really believe that. I don't agree with the notion that he'd be leaving a winner to come to a loser. On the contrary, he'd be leaving a winner to start a new winner AND in the best city in the world with a ton of off-the-court opportunities waiting for him. That's how I'll continue to look at this until he says no...

As far as Melo's take, isn't he the same guy who had some nice things to say about NY, and about Gallo's improvement as a player recently? Melo doesn't know man...Nobody does...We'll all just have to wait and see but we have as good a chance as anyone.

i understand & i agree there were fundamental differences between him & Wilt... but let's say if Tim Duncan, who many people will agree is a simple guy who isn't really concerned about the fame part, were faced with the decision to either accept a max offer from the Knicks or if the Spurs offered him signicantly less, can we assume he'd take significantly less to stay in San Antonio? i just dunno about that... these days money talks & bullshiet walks.

now i know if the offers were the same that Duncan would definitely stay in San Antonio, & that's a different situation than Lebron is facing now, but for Lebron he would also be leaving a ton of marketing dollars behind if he doesn't make the move, so for Bill Russell to say stuff like that when he lived in a completely different era where the sport was not nearly as commercialized with its worldwide global appeal i think u can't really apply it to this day... i don't know many "winners" that don't let the dollars dictate their decisions these days... Kobe would leave LA if they didn't pony up the big bucks to keep him in LA, you can believe that... same goes for Derek Jeter with the Yankees.
