No jail time in gun case for NBA's Gilbert Arenas
By the CNN Wire Staff March 26, 2010 4:33 p.m. EDT STORY HIGHLIGHTS • Gilbert Arenas received two years of supervised probaton in gun case • He had pleaded guilty to felony gun charge • Washington Wizards guard brought guns into locker room after dispute with teammate • Prosecutors were seeking a three-month jail term for Arenas Washington (CNN) -- Suspended NBA star Gilbert Arenas was sentenced to two years of supervised probation Friday for bringing guns into his team's locker room. He also is to serve 30 days in a halfway house. Judge Robert Morin ordered him to perform 400 hours of community service and contribute $5,000 to a fund for victims of violence. Arenas, a suspended point guard for the Washington Wizards, pleaded guilty on January 15 to illegally bringing four guns into the team's locker room during an ongoing dispute with teammate Javaris Crittenton. Arenas' lawyers were seeking probation. They called the NBA player a good role model, and said he's already been punished severely through public scorn and loss of income. Prosecutors, who sought three months in jail for the NBA star, said Arenas lied repeatedly about the incident. As part of a plea deal, they agreed not to seek more than six months in jail. "If any other individual without fame, power and the wealth of this defendant brought four firearms into the District for the purpose of a similar confrontation, the government would seek their incarceration and the court would almost certainly give it," prosecutor Chris Kavanaugh said. "Despite a history of pranks and misguided practical jokes, he is a peaceful man who is not aggressive or confrontational in any way," according to court documents released by Arenas' attorneys. http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/03/26/gilbert.arenas.sentencing/index.html?hpt=T1 |
