Will Kobe join free-agent circus?

Story Highlights
Kobe Bryant, who has talked extension with the Lakers, can opt out this summer
The Knicks could target Kobe if he is on the market and LeBron stays in Cleveland

Though the focus of this summer's free agency is squarely on LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, a theory is circulating through NBA circles that involves another MVP candidate.

Because it seems a foregone conclusion that Kobe Bryant will return to the Lakers for the final year of his contract, his name has rarely been mentioned alongside other stars potentially on the move.

But as coach Phil Jackson's contract situation continues to drag on, and as Bryant has failed to sign an extension that would allow him to end his career as a Laker, some executives are beginning to speculate that if Bryant believes the team is no longer willing to commit financially to success, he may opt out of the final year of his contract and go elsewhere.

The primary destination: New York.

"I could see that happening," one general manager told SI.com. "But I couldn't see both Kobe and LeBron ending up in New York at the same time. Two alpha personalities are not going to be able to play together."

Perhaps, but if James stays in Cleveland, the Knicks could possibly put together a lineup that features Bryant, Bosh, Tracy McGrady (if he re-signs for a fraction of his $22.5 million salary), Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler.

BasketballJones responds:

No, but I think he would use the threat of it to get more $ out of the Lakers.

They share an apartment together and a big shoe closet.

Maybe its a duel marketing strategy.

a max contract for Kobe is more than a max contract for Lebron... he's got 14 years of NBA service under his belt, which puts him into the highest salary bracket for max salary players... Lebron, Wade, Bosh & Amare all have less than 10 years of NBA experience which puts them all into a max salary tier just below Kobe... they can make up to 30% of their team's cap whereas Kobe can make up to 35%... so even if it were even possible that Kobe would consider opting out of his contract in LA to sign with NY this summer, we would not have enough cap room to sign another max FA to play with him out of the Lebron/Wade/Bosh/Amare group.

Yeah, I don't see it. I think Buss has pretty much said that he wants Kobe to be a Laker for life, so it's not like we can scare the Lakers away with a big offer.

LBJ and kobe won't happen. But I could see Kobe, LBJ, Wade, Bosh, and Amare all taking paycuts to join the Knicks, and coach K quitting Duke and becoming the Knicks new head coach.

Coach K kind of resigned himself publicly that he is at Duke for the rest of his career.

He is chasing the coaching gods now for records and still gets the pick of the litter. Got his daughters and grandkids in Durham with him and life is good. Gets what ever he wants at Duke and plenty of money.

Im sure we'd run his ass out also if he did not win a title here!

lol. i did hear of this and i think sheradin was the one spreading this. look, there is NO way the lakers will let kobe walk. they will give him keys to the city for his service. however, if the lakers do not make it out of the west in the playoffs.........?
