MDA's legacy as coach of the Knicks is still a work in progress, as is Walsh's stint as the Knicks' decision maker.
We have had no PG and no real center during the 2 years MDA has coached this team. Even with our recent acquisitions, which have made our PG position more productive, we have no interior defensive strength with Lee and Harrington defending down low. We are playing a zone because MDA is trying to adjust to the fact that we are defensively weak in the paint. Lee can be criticized for some of our problems down low, but he is playing out of position, and it is not realistic to think that he can be a defensive force down low. We don't have a natural center who can defend at the position on this team, or even someone who can put up 2 blocks/game. (Don't want to get into the MDA/Darko situation and why it did not work out at all.)
If Donnie succeeds in getting MDA some stars for next year, then the ball is in D'Antoni's hands, and if he does not produce, you will be able to hammer him as much as you want with justification. As for me- I'm still giving him a pass for now. The same is true for Walsh, who had to dig us out of the hole Isiah put us in.
As for Jackson- who know who we would have picked or if he would have produced as coach. I like him, but what has he done in the area of coaching?
As for Lopez- if Lopez is as good as you think, we might not have been in position to choose Jennings...right? You can't believe that Lopez is a game changer and think our record would have gotten us a #8. You can't assume that we would have had a record that would have allowed us to pick Jennings...right?
As for Jennings- the jury is still out on this kid. He has shown promise, but he is no lock to be a consistent PG in the NBA (I wonder how patient guys around here would be with his shooting and defensive weaknesses that would have been magnified without the shot blocker and other defensive players the Bucks have. He is also blessed with a true center, an excellent backup PG, and a newly revived SG (Salmons).
