I remember looking at these type of #s with baseball.
They show a very small part of the picture. Also, one of the things that isnt factored in at all is the value of the franchise. If you bought a franchise for $200mm 10 years ago and now its worth $450mm and you operated at loss of $5mm a year can you really sit here and cry about not making money?
Cuban's payroll has been ridiculous for awhile, but that franchise was a joke when he bought it and the Mavs are a pretty valuable commodity right now.
Lets also remember that a lot of these owners are perfectly happy operating at a loss because of the tax write off and it can balance other business costs.
A guy thats dumb is someone like Jordan, who probably thinks he's going to make money by owning a team. Sports franchises are rarely big money makers. They are more investments and part of a bigger portfolio. Unless your someone like George buying the Yankees... but thats the exception.
NBA owners are the richest people in the world. Waaaa.... go buy something else for a half a billion if you dont like the CBA.
The NBA makes money, and its the players that fill the seats. This is why I am I think baseball has it right. People dont pay for George. The pay to see Arod and Jeter and Cc, etc.
I find it puzzling that athletes are so criticized for their money. They are entertaining us. Nobody cares that Tom Cruise makes $20mm a movie, of that Bono has made a billion dollar playing music and singing about Irish politics. If you dont like it dont see the movie, buy the album or go to the game.
NBA owners have a fair CBA. If anything they should dump the cap, enforce a tougher luxury tax and extend rookie contracts a year
