It's shocking and surprising that nobody on here or most people anywhere, talks about the incredible earthquake (8.8 on the Richter Scale) that hit Chile. That country needs some major help as well and I'm curious why people choose to underlook it.

The Chilean earthquake is not underlooked by me.

However, the probable reasons there hasn't been as much coverage are several: A) The sheer death toll is nowhere close to the Haiti disaster. B) Timing. Haiti happened first. C: I am guessing there are a lot more Haitians in the U.S. than Chileans.

However, the Chilean people deserve our support as well. Just because it is not the worst disaster ever does not mean it isn't bad. My understanding is that things are steadily getting worse with desperate people looting etc.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

I understand those reasons might make it a little underlooked, but the only places I see people talking about it are on the news. I don't hear people talking about it publicly AT ALL. Yet people, myself included, find all the time in the world to talk about stuff like sports and (Not myself included here) stupid tv shows. That to me, is sad.

I've heard people talk about this lame shyt called "donation fatigue"

I guess Chile was inconsiderate and rude to experience a major disaster right off the heels of one a month-and-a-half prior.

I mean, many Americans just gave 10 DOLLARS to Haiti relief. How much more can you ask from us???????

Chile is much more prepared for this than Haiti was.

I did text H-A-I-T-I once, but I ignored it when HAITI texted back. Don't wanna lead HAITI on...

How can you at all be prepared for an Earthquake of a 8.8 magnitude. Yes, Haitii was already in worse shape because it's such a third world country, and I'm not sure what Chiles' situation is, but damn man, that place is wrecked now too.

Another disaster probably won't sell ad revenue. And people are stupid lemmings who will only talk about what is crammed into their pea brains.

I know I've mentioned my parents now live around Houston. They live in Galveston, TX. I dealt with that. I evacuated with my mom and my dad stayed on the island (for work). The news people were talking about how staying on was certain death and how people needed to scribble their socials on their arms so their corpses would be recognizable... **** like that.

Anyway, Merrill Lynch announced mass layoffs when my mom and I are waiting to get back on. Then, there seemed to be national interest in the elections. Poof. I suppose there was only so much surplus ad space after Katrina.

Worst part is there were some people that thought we were making up the gravity of the situation because the networks stopped covering it. I would punch Wolf Blitzer and Geraldo Rivera in the face if given the opportunity

Because even though it was an 800x stronger magnitude they have earthquakes thre more often than HAITI and have built to withstand it.

^Not kidding around.

http://www.newser.com/story/82166/chile-quake-shifted-earths-axis-shortened-day.html

The island of Santa Maria, off the Chilean coast, may have been pushed upward by about 2 meters, scientists say.

That's unheard of. It usually takes like a thousand years just to move an inch!
