I know the immediate reaction is that he'll definitely get offers at the MLE, especially from championship-level teams like Boston. And despite his claims that he'll accept less money, I don't think he realizes that if we sign 2 max FA's, there is no cap room for even the likes of Sergio, let alone TMac.

But here's an interesting rule in the CBA, pulled from Larry Coon's FAQ:

"If the player does not sign with any team (his prior team or any other team) for the entire season, then his renouncement continues. In other words, the team is not permitted to renounce a player, let him lie idle for the year, then re-sign him the following summer using Bird rights. However, if the player re-signs with his prior team, then his renouncement is no longer in effect when his contract ends. For example, if a team renounces their Larry Bird rights to a player, then re-signs that player to a one-year contract using cap room, then the player is once again a Larry Bird free agent the following summer."

Basically, if TMac resigns with us for the minimum for one year, we still retain his bird-rights for the summer of 2011. Meaning Walsh can make the pitch to TMac, "sign with us for the minimum for one-year, and we'll resign you for $8-10M over 3 years the following summer."

This obviously won't work for the likes of Lee who's still looking for his big pay day, but for TMac, who's in the final years of his career, he may just resign with us for one year, and keep his bird rights, especially if we sign 2 maxes. He's no longer looking to be the man, the #1 scoring option. Pretty sure, at this point, he's only looking for a ring (or to at least get past the 2nd round lol), and would love to play with LeBron.

Hm, that sounds GOOD except some team with the MLE will offer him more.

Which team under the cap will offer him more than the MLE?

He may still take the MLE from a veteran team like Boston or Dallas, but at least we can make a somewhat competitive financial offer. Before reading this rule/loophole, I thought when we renounced his Bird Rights, we'd end up resetting the 3-year clock, making a minimum offer extremely less enticing. Now, we're just asking him to delay his payday for the chance to play with two other maxes.

Exactly, if T-Mac holds up for these last 28 games, some team is going to offer him a nice fat full MLE contract. They would be fools not too. When healthy, this guy is a top-5 player and he showed last night that he can still play near that level. Unless he totally breaks down over the next 28 games, someone will give him that contract and I will find it hard to believe he is going to turn down that guaranteed money to play with Lerbon when there are other contenders out there (Boston, Lakers, San Antonio, Miami, Orlando) that might all offer a full MLE deal.

The only way it happens is if Walsh can trade Curry for a player making roughy $7.5 mil with 1 year left on his deal, which will free up another $2-$3 mill that we could offer McGrady. EIther that or pray the cap figure comes in at $55 mil.

Trust the Process

i think a 1 year contract scenario is more likely for T-Mac... he won't want to commit to a longterm deal any more than a team would want to sign him one at this point... if he can prove he can return to form over a full season he's looking at a much bigger pay day in 2011 when all the bignames of 2010 are already signed with other teams.
