....okay kids, those who know me know that I've been here for a looonnnnngggg time but I don't post a lot unless I have something to say.I just had dinner with a relative of an Eastern Conference GM (hint, hint it's a city damn close to NYC). First thing he says to me when we're at dinner is "You're friggin' Knicks are in good shape." I asked him what his relative thought and he says "He's not happy with it. It makes his job harder."
The GM said basically the Knicks have a huge advantage this summer for the following reasons:
1) the Garden
2) On July 1 at midnight Knicks can literally send D'Antoni to LeBron's house and Walsh to Bosh's house and set up a SKYPE/iChat, etc. and say "it's yours guys, all you have to do is sign!"
3) Even if it doesn't work out with them this summer, the Knicks are in position to do anything they want in '10 and '11, and LASTLY
4) You just can't underestimate the appeal of NYC. "We can't compete with it, everyone knows there are 3-4 big stages in the NBA and NYC is a crown jewel. Players love New York, it's a huge selling point. They know what kind of legacy winning in NYC can create."
My friend was so kind of bummed because his relative who was once lauded is easily being destroyed by his the local media and will be on the hot seat very soon, but they both know it comes with the territory so they're not devastated.
in other words, the rest of the Eastern Conference is on guard and not exactly thrilled that Donnie was able to pull it off. Obviously they were rooting like crazy it wouldn't go through.
I asked him if his relative thought the trade was fair including the picks. The GM said "they overpaid just a bit but it was fair, it was what they had to do to be in a great position this summer. If there plan works this summer, no one's going to care about their 2012 trick."
I asked about Jordan HIll, but his relative didn't talk to him about that.
