The 2009/2010 salary cap is $55mm. So in theory you can not go over that by signing someone else's free agents right? And you cant use cap space to sign a FA, then use bird rights to keep your own guys once your over the cap right?

So explain this:
How did Toronto give Hedo a $9mm contract using cap space, when their current salary cap is $65mm.

WTF?

b/c they didn't use cap space.

it was an elaborate 4 team s&t. if they gave hedo a contract via cap space, they would've had to renounce the MLE and LLE. but b/c they got orlando involved to agree to a S&T with dallas (who wanted marion), it all worked out via S&T's.

that's what we have to hope can happen this summer. i believe it's possible.

in toronto's case, marion was a free agent who re-signed with the raptors to get more and be moved to dallas. knicks can use harrington and dlee to the same ends this summer.

in toronto's case, re-signing marion put them over the cap which allowed the s&t to take place.

re-signing harrington and lee won't do that so it doesn't help in regards to a true max FA.

but it will help for every other FA that wants a 6th year. but imho, anybody over the age of 27 should not be getting a 6th year.
