This is just me being bored and thinking about possible trades, but what about Anthony Randolph? I know some posters on this board love the guy and think he is going to be great, and other posters have different thoughts regarding randolph. Looking at it objectively, he is athletic and multi-talented and might be a good fit to play PF/C in Dantoni's system. There have also been rumors that Randolph is on his way out, and because of his injury his trade value could be very low. I'm not sure what the warriors would want from us for Randolph, but a package of either Chandler, Hill, or Douglas and a first round pick (and maybe an expiring contract) might be enough to make the Warriors send us Randolph.
Let's also face the reality that we have 99% of our eggs in the Lebron James basket, so we should throw that last egg in and start molding our roster to fit perfectly with Lebron. We just cannot have 3 SF's and Lee on the court at once, so we need to move either Gallo or Chandler, and in my opinion Chandler should be on his way out (preferably for Randolph). I think Lee is going to be our Center, simply because he is the most realistic option. Randolph is a very good shot-blocker so he could mask some of Lee's defensive flaws. Also, even though Lee is small for a Center, we would have tremendous length in our starting lineup (PG?, Lebron 6-8, Gallo 6-10, Randolph 6-11, Lee 6'9). I still think we should trade Harrington for Thomas and hopefully we can get Tmac to open up cap space.
In my eyes, this is what our rotation could be next year:
PG - No idea, maybe Felton, Sergio Rodriguez, or another cheap FA (IMO Douglas isnt a starter)
SG - Lebron James
SF - Danilo Gallinari
PF - Anthony Randolph
C - David Lee
6 - Tyrus Thomas
7 - Tmac? (on a cheap contract though)/House?/Giddens?
8 - Either Chandler or Hill (the one we dont trade for Randolph)
We would obviously need some more depth at the guard spots (maybe House and Giddens) and it would be important to get a huge defensive center (similar to brendan haywood) to match up with the big men in the playoffs.
While I would love to sign 3 max FA's, that might not be a possibility. And if we land Lebron and can't sign another max FA, I would be happy with this team (and I think Lebron would too). David Lee would definitely be the best player Lebron has ever played with, and you can make a case that Gallo, Thomas, Tmac, Randolph, and Chandler would all be in or near the top 10 of that list. Lebron is a ****y dude and he has every right to be, so if he took a team of mo williams, big z, varejao, pavlovic, gibson, and west to the finals why wouldnt he think he could win it with Lee, Gallo, Tmac, Randolph, Thomas, and Chandler? A player of Lebron's caliber might not need a second superstar to win a ring, he might just need a very solid supporting cast (which the Knicks will have no matter what trades happen).
Also, the main reason I think Lebron will come to NY is basically the talent difference between the 2 teams. I know Cleveland has the best record in the NBA but look at their players outside of Lebron. They are a bunch of average - below average players. The best of the bunch is now jamison (who is 34 btw) and although he was a good player, he is on the downside of his career and can't be counted on to bring it every night. And Mo Williams is nothing special either, he is a product of getting open looks from lebron. What I'm trying to say is that if you took Lebron off the Cavs and they played the Knicks, the Knicks would kill them. Lebron makes that team a contender, and he could just as easily make our team a champion.
Also the Cavs are f***ed in the future, they gave out big money to Varejao (VERY bad contract), they have 2 key players which are going to retire soon (Jamison & Shaq), a bunch of older role players that are going to retire soon, and they won't be under the cap for quite some time. So does Lebron really want to play with a core of Varejao, Williams, Jamison, and Gibson for the next 3 years? I dont think so. As of now, the Knicks look to be a better team (than the cavs without lebron) with a better future, so ultimately I see Lebron in a Knicks uniform in 2010 because of that. Also, David Stern is going to make sure it happens just like the Patrick Ewing Pick
