Head Coach George Karl will miss several games because of a medical issue, 9NEWS has learned.

Karl will inform his players tonight that he has a serious illness and needs to leave the team for an undetermined amount of time.

The 58-year-old underwent surgery for prostate cancer in July 2005. A year later, his son Coby had a cancerous tumor in his thryroid removed.

Karl is the seventh winningest coach in NBA history and coached for the NBA All Star Game over the weekend.

Karl's longtime assistant, Adrian Dantley, is a likely candidate to direct the Nuggets during his absence.

Wow, that's horrible. I hope he gets well soon.

Throat and neck cancer - hi Dr's say it's treatable. I wish him the best of luck in his battle, he has been a coach in the NBA ever since I can remember and I have a lot of respect for him. Cancer is no joke, good luck George.

Seems like they caught it early so the prognosis is good. Second time he's had to battle cancer in such a short time...and two different kinds of cancer no less. My heart goes out to him- hopefully he can get through this and continue coaching. He's done a great job in Denver.

I'm glad to hear that the prognosis is good. I think that he should consider retirement. The stress of a high pressure job can be a factor in any illness and there are few higher pressure jobs than coaching an nba team.
