i think everyone knows that i've moved on from the orange and blue...so think of my opinion as that of a guy on the outside looking in.
i have no problems with d'alsh's plan of cutting salary for 2010 and going for the prime targets. i can see why they would do it. but i also disagree with it b/c i feel that if you're in ny, the best thing you can do is try to keep acquiring talent and keep winning as many games as possible b/c the city and fans demand it. the 2010 thing was a total play for a savior and i feel, castrated alot of knicks fans. at that point, everyone was told that the next 2 years didn't matter.
but they then brought in a coach that's not known for rebuilding and likes to play vets. he also wanted to win in the interim so that cost the team a higher pick. i thought it was a great hire but as time went on it turns out that he might not have been the best hire for the current state of purgatory the knicks. he's a coach that if given guys that can score, can help them overachieve. that's why the team should've just kept buying players as talented guys were available on the cheap. d'antoni could've got them to overachieve and get the garden rocking again. but they didn't do that. and his coaching a not so talented team sort of exposed him in a way and that's why i kept posting about my dissapointment in him.
so...they brought in d'antoni and tried to give him some vets which all but insured a mid to late lottery pick. that was very shortsighted b/c they already gave fans a reason to accept losing in the form of 2010.
and now, it's possible 2010 isn't going to yield the fruits they expected. which then makes the whole plan somewhat questionable. IF they decided to just play younger guys, got away from vets (like the nets/kings did) then that would've made alot more sense than trying to win as they would've been long term pieces and could've yielded better picks. but guys like harrington & hughes & duhon were brought in with the idea of winning and not caring about those draft picks.
anyways, long story short...it's all about who they sign this summer. gallo does not matter. chandler does not matter. is hill even on the team? it's all about 2010. when 75% of all knicks discussion is how to dump deals, then that's all that matters.
july is judgment day. and if they are unable to acquire a big time free agent, i fear it could *break* alot of knicks fans spirits b/c after all the isiah nonsense, this was the only thing that hasnt been tried...and i don't think they can handle it if it fails. a handful can...or say they can...but i won't believe them.
