we all know that this was by far the worse decade of this franchise. however,i, like many knicks fans, often wonder could this have been avoided and when. i think there were a LOT of scenerios that would have put us in a better predicament so i wanted to start this what if thread and try to predict what would have happened whether it is "what if we didnt trade ewing" to "what if we kept crawford and randolph". i would like to go chronologically but it doesnt matter. the first scenario is an issue that started before 2000:

what if the knicks did not make the playoffs in 1999?

this was probably the last great season the knicks had tho the nxt two were decent also but the magic was just prevalent. however, it made me wonder whether or not it was bad overall for the team. well, if we didnt make it the first thing would have been van gundy getting fired. it would be a shame but then we would have had phil jax as coach and gm which is what he wanted at the time. would this have made us a championship team, i dont know but he would have stayed until we were around that level. ewing would be gone and traded because jax wouldnt keep him on the team. camby would probably be a goner too and spree untradeable tho they would want to. probably manipulate cap room in 2000 to get hill or mcgrady because they would do well in the triangle offense scheme with houston being a huge asset in that offense. this would mean a good team until 2005 before rebuilding.

Phil Jackson was never going to come here. He used us to get more money out of the next employer. He's only interested in teams with championship talent built in and he hates NY for whatever reason. Prolly because he's a corporate sellout now --- when he was with the Knicks he was this beatnik hippie type. NY reminds him of the authentic brotha he used to be.

I dont know why the hell we didnt hire Jerry West when we had the chance. That was the guy that would have put a quick halt to our early-decade skid.

If Columbus sailed in correct direction it will be no Coca-Cola, Super bowl, and Uncle Sam...

my intent of this thread is not to be malicious or complaining. i thought it would be fun to do, nothing more or nothing less. i just find it amazing that certain moves that were made before had a domino effect on the state of our franchise and how it affected a whole decade.

I agree that we cannot review our miserable situation, and how we got here, often enough.

A few bad loses and we start self loathing again.

Phil was rejected a few times before he was hired by the bulls.

Remember, Jerry krouse hired him with no NBA head coaching experience. Jordan was basically a scoring machine and the team was not even close to top notch. Give the the man his due that he took talent and made it great. He elevated Jordan to the legend.

In LA he also did a great job and slamming him for only wanting to be with talented players is silly.

No winning coach ever won without talented players.

Larry Brown who is Kicking ass in Season no. 2 in Charlotte Won in Detroit without a superstar. We ran his ass off.

PHil should have been the knick coach but back in the day it was all about the Starphuch and eventually we got Pat Riley.

This all started with the premature firing of Ernie Grunfeld (Who i was never a big fan of but he didn't deserve the axe, especially after his best offseason as Knick GM with the Spree and Camby moves), Ed Tapscott's stupid pick of Frederic Weis when he was interim GM for like 2 seconds, and then the hiring of Scott Layden who proceeded to take a wrecking ball to the entire Knicks organization and literally not make one single good move in his time here. That whole span of about 5 month's shaped the whole decade of crap

What about "the streak" of 6 wins under Marbury? Wasn't that nice?
If you are still following the team and reading sites like this, there is nothing, short of your own demise, that is going to throw you off this train.

i would say the next mistake the knicks made was trading ewing in the first place. sure ewing asked for a trade but he was in his last year and ewing will play, even if he wasnt happy. he is a professional. just tell him that we are exploring trades. that case, we would have had cap room the following year and picked up two players with ewings contract off the books. instead we received mess that really didnt result in anything, including the couple of picks we received.
