Why Dallas does it: With Dirk as a cap hold, they are over the cap and won't have space to sign a free agent. They get Lee who can resign at $10.5M; imagine Kidd and Lee in the pick and roll with Dirk, Marion, Terry on the wing. They take on JJ for this year and next and he can defend Kobe, Parker, Deron Williams, Carmelo, Nash, Durant or whomever in the playoff for spurts (and Dallas is good enough offensively to have him get significant minutes off the bench). Dallas can go big with Dampier, Lee, Dirk, Marion, Kidd (matching up against Lakers). Or go smaller with Dampier, Dirk, Marion, Terry, Kidd and Lee/Jefferies/etc off bench. Or go fast with Lee, Dirk, Marion, Terry, Kidd. They get 2 bigs for 1.
What Dallas loses: They lose G offense off the bench. I think the bigs in the Western conference (especially Lakers) are more important to have. Howard hasn't played much over the past few years anyway. Why Knicks do it: Love Lee but love no Curry/Jefferies even more. Can sign 2 max guys and have room to spare. Carrol can be another guy to spread the O. Keep and/or trade Howard again. Trade works on one Trade Machine: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yzyo4fv Thoughts?
