I haven't heard of anything involving the Knicks right now. We know they're not taking contracts beyond this season so it leaves the market limited. But you both are correct, a PG is still a place of need. As I wrote today, Duhon is the only player D'Antoni seems to trust to run the offense. Nate is a good scorer off the bench, but he struggles when he has to run the offense.
Gemini, I don't know of any trade interest in Nate as you suggest.

Charlotteseems like such a natural trade partner...excess of their guards...matches with Knick excess at forward and Donnie and Larry's ties.....is Acie Law ready to move? Think there was a caveat about making too many moves in a time frame....Think he'd thrive here....
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:01 Jerry G.
12:03

You might be right there. Donnie and Larry do speak and have a good relationship. That's why I always felt if there was a taker for Eddy Curry, it would be Charlotte, mainly because Larry loves post-up bigs and knows Curry. CHA does have an excess of PGs so we'll see.

Hi Alan. Watching the last two games, I thought it was more apparent than ever how overmatched the Knicks are at the PG spot on an almost nightly basis. I like Duhon (Nate not so much) but Knick guards were destroyed by Brooks/Lowry and Westbrook/Maynor. Can the Knicks find an upgrade here before the trade deadline? Perhaps trade for DJ Augustin or Jerryd Bayless or even revisit Ramon Sessions? Having a PG that's a threat is so critical for the long term.
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:04 Jon
12:06

I am actually wondering if Steve Blake might be a possible target. Portland is so riddled with injuries so maybe they'd look for a big in exchange for one of their guards? Bayless is more of a combo and I think the Knicks really need more of a passer/playmaker who can run an offense, which is why Blake seems like a much better fit. DJ Augustin is small and you really already have a small guard in Nate Robinson. I do not see the Knicks going after Ramon Sessions now because if they wanted him, they could have signed him for that same contract in September.

ESPN's Chris Sheridan keeps insisting that Cuttino's contract is an important sweetener if the Knicks are going to trade for T-Mac. But I know you've said that the Knicks won't use his deal in any trade. Why do the Knicks keep lying to Chris like that?
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:06 Jon
12:08

Chris is generally in the know but I've consistently asked about the Mobley contract and the consistent answer I get is Donnie Walsh is not going to use it for a trade because the NBA is in the process of completing the retirement. I don't know if anyone is lying to Chris or he is just basing it on his own opinion. You'd have to ask him.

[Comment From That guy from the placeThat guy from the place: ]
Would you say it is a fair assessment that the Knicks were so enamored with Stephen Curry that they just didn’t do the necessary research on any other players and just picked on assumption? I feel like this mirrors last year trend where they were so focused on Gallo that it seemed like it didn’t matter how well the other prospects would perform. (Don’t get me wrong, I would probably pick Gallo at 5th regardless of how extraordinary Lopez is playing).
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:08 That guy from the place
12:12

No I wouldn't go that far. They brought in several players in the predraft process. Curry was a favorite, for sure, but then again, so was Tyreke Evans. Walsh, from what I'm told, really liked him a lot. If the Knicks had a shot at Curry and Evans, I think 'Reke would have been a Knick. But at No. 8, that opportunity was never going to present itself. That's why the Knicks tried to move up to Washington's No. 5.
Donnie did call out his scouts about Brandon Jennings, but that is a different situation. He played in Europe and really didn't get a great deal of minutes there. That is one place where I say the criticism is fair, but not anywhere else.

Alan, good afternoon to you. It was reported recently that Houston wanted Jordan Hill or Toney Douglas in any deal involving Tmac and that the sides weren't close. Quote Morey ""There might not be a fit with New York because their goals don't necessarily meet our goals," Morey said. "I think they like him but there's an issue of fit." Reading into that, does that mean Rockets won't take back Curry or Jeffries? They want Hill or Douglas and expirings?
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:12 HammockDistrict
12:15

Yea, we had that on Sunday, that Houston wanted a young player such as Hill and the Knicks weren't giving up a future asset like that for a mercenary. Daryl is basically saying that in his quote and also that the Rockets aren't interested in taking on salary that goes beyond 2010. Might need to get a third team involved here, so I wouldn't say it's completely dead. But if the Knicks are interested, they should get to Chicago and watch T-Mac work out before they do anything. He certainly didn't look ready for a major role in the games he played for Houston.

Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:15 brendan

I don't beleive there is as much of an emphasis in moving Jared anymore. His value to the team right now is greater than the need to trade him by Feb. 18. Remember, the Knicks can always try to move him on draft night or this summer. Jared's defense is too important right now and the goal is to make the playoffs.
As for David Lee - absolutely not. It is the fact that he's seeing double- and triple-teams now.

Hey Alan... wont be here the whole time so hope you can answer this question... Jordan Hill!?! Good offensive rebounder, decent jump shot... is he really not as good as J Bender!?! hasnt played in 4 yrs... and plays more then our lottery pick!?! i know the emphasis is winning but unless he's being packaged in a deal, i thought he was a future building piece!?!
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:18 s0li (knicks twixer)
12:22

I've watched Jordan a little more closely lately just so I maintain a proper perspective of the kid after I was down on him a lot since the summer. I do think he has the ability to play a rotation role here, but when you consider MDA's choices in his top 8, it's hard to find a place for him. Even Bender, I think, belongs in there because I agree with Mike: once he gets into a comfort zone again at this level, he can be very helpful for this team down the stretch. He is long and very smart and has a terrific shot. Yes, it's been four years. It's going to take a little time.
Jordan is being shelved here, that's for sure. You could argue that he should be coming in to play behind David Lee and with consistent minutes he could be a very effective player. Mike is choosing right now to go with the veteran (Bender) with the belief that he could turn into a valuable asset come March-April.

[Comment From AJ from NewarkAJ from Newark: ]
Alan do you think that D.Lee might jump ship in the off season to the Nets everywhere i see they keep saying how much they like D.LEE and if that's the case would that make it harder for the Knicks to resign him as they might be in a bidding war with the next door neighbor's. Also going to start PX90 can't wait to feel the burner...lol
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:22 AJ from Newark
12:24

I think the Nets would be a great alternative for David for many reasons: 1., he could move to PF and have a solid 7-footer next to him on defense and the boards. 2. he'd get to continue living in NY, which matters to him. I also beleive Cleveland would be a terrific spot for him. Everyone is talking Bosh for the Cavs, but they would get a much better bargain (and a more suitable team concept player) in Lee, who could run pick-and-rolls with LeBron all night long. Anderson Varejao could either move to center or come off the bench.
As for P90X...congrats. Trust me, you get out of it what you put into it. Good luck.

Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:25 iamsalty
12:27

The haunted hotel story is funny, but let's be honest, do you really think the team was "scared" to play? No, I have to question Mike's decision to go box-and-one to start off against Durant. It was a defense the players clearly were not comfortable with and took them out of their confidence. Mike should have let Wilson go straight up and gotten into the zone as well. The Knicks were a mess in that first quarter and it really had them out of their game IMHO.

[Comment From mikemike: ]
If the Knicks were in fact able to acquire T-Mac, where would he fit into the mold, I mean he wouldn't take minutes away from Gallo or Chandler. So again he'd be a player coming off the bench here in my opinion, wouldnt that cause just as much controversy as there was in Houston? Also regarding trades, do you think there are possible destinations for Curry? I kinda like Jeffries, he is the glue on the defensive side of the ball
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:28 mike
12:31

T-Mac would be a PG here, trust me. He and Duhon would share that role and, quite frankly, it would likely mean Nate Robinson back on the bench. So in that case, I guess you are right about the potential for controversy.
I can't figure any possible destinations for Curry because he hasn't played nearly enough for a team to take a chance on him. Maybe Detroit, who needs a big, would consider it as they opt to blow up their team. Would Dallas think about it? Has to be a team that plays traditional halfcourt, obviously. One thing to keep in mind is that Curry is an expiring contract next summer, so there's less risk when you trade for him, especially if you're giving up a longer-term deal. Keep this in mind, Fixers, because if the Knicks don't sign a big-name, they may try to trade for one already under contract.

12:31

[Comment From DarrenDarren: ]
This team still has problems on the road, a hallmark of any mediocre ball club. Anyhow, I'm still concerned that Duhon will run into the same problem as last year: overworked and underperformance. Do you see any way to rectify this situation? It seems to me D'Antoni recognizes it and is giving Nate some more minutes.
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:31 Darren
12:32

Duhon's minutes are down about two per game, which isn't much. But you can see Mike is trying to get him rests throughout games. However, you also can see that they won't leave Nate in the game for long stretches as the primary ballhandler. Nate is a scorer but he struggles when he has to run the offense. It's just not his strength. So, yes, the search continues for another PG to help Duhon.

[Comment From PCPC: ]
Do you think the Knicks or Cavs have a better current supporting cast?
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:33 PC
12:35

With Shaq and Ilgauskas, I'd say the Cavs, because that kind of size and experience is nowhere to be found on the Knicks roster. But if you ask me which roster has better potential in the future, I'd say the Knicks, mainly because the Cavs don't have anything as promising as Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari. And if you include David Lee, it's not even close.

[Comment From Ben (NYC)Ben (NYC): ]
How important is tonight's game? Obviously it'd be an exageration to call it a must win, but after looking lost against OKC and in the second half vs Hou I'd call it a pretty big game. Important 4 game stretch against eastern conference, mediocre teams before the real tough ones vs LA and DAL. Do you agree that Chandler fell back into his early trap of taking too many jumpshots and not attacking the bucket enough these last 2 games? Maybe a product of going against the smartest perimeter defender in the league in Battier?
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:35 Ben (NYC)
12:37

No, you are not exaggerating Ben. After two losses, the Knicks have to have a sense of urgency here against a sub-.500 team that is having their own problems. And the Sixers have always given the Knicks fits lately. They struggle with Iguodala and Dalembert and Philly's athleticism and ability to attack the rim. This is not a game to sleep on by any means. Three straight losses should sound the alarm.
And on Wilson, yes, he definitely did settle for jumpers rather than attack. I think if you are scouting the Knicks, that's something you point out to your players.

Hi Alan...love the blog...Weather Report...it actually rained in CA last night....ok now to my question :)......would you trade Jordan Hill and Jared Jefferies at the deadline for an expiring contract? This would bring our total owed next year somewhere around 18 Mil really allowing us to go after 2 studs..lebron and bosh say...or even lebron, keep lee and possible a third guy in the 8 million per range...then we can take currys expiring contract and trade for a guy like monta ellis assuming GS still wants to get rid of him....whatcha think?
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:37 Tommy from California
12:39

But was it Southern California? Because it never rains in . . . ah, never mind.
No I wouldn't. Not unless by Feb. 18 the Knicks are too far out of the playoff race. But Jared is just too important for this team on defense to dump him. Remember, you can always try to move his salary in the offseason.

Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:39 brendan
12:42

Darko isn't going to be bought out if he thinks he is taking all of his money with him, so until he's ready to give up some cash just to go home and hang out in Europe, I can't see the Knicks agreeing to it. There should be a roster spot opening soon once Mobley's situation is cleared up, but it does help to have roster spots when you want to make a multi-player deal.

There has been a lot of talk recently about the Raptors possibly trading Bosh before the trade deadline. Obviously the Knicks would need to include David Lee in any deal for Bosh. Is there any chance Lee would sign off on a deal to Toronto and agree to re-sign with them? He would actually be a good fit, but I dont see it.
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:42 HammockDistrict
12:43

I don't see anything happening with Toronto and the Knicks for Bosh. Why would the Raptors, who are battling for a playoff spot, give their best player to the Knicks, who are also battling for a roster spot? They'll look to ship him out West if they do wind up trading him.
And, really, I don't know if Bosh is that high on the Knicks' list this offseason.

[Comment From Ben (NYC)Ben (NYC): ]
Do you know if the knicks practiced that box and 1 before throwing it at durant? I can't remember the last time I saw that in an nba game and the knicks certainly looked quite lost playing it. I'm a dantoni fan but I think he may be getting too creative for his own good on D. The hybrid 2-3 / 3-2 zone with jeffries playing the middle is about as swiss cheese as they come.
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:43 Ben (NYC)
12:45

D'Antoni said it wasn't supposed to be a box-in-one, but it turned into that. Clearly they didn't spend a great deal of time on it. They had practice in OKC on Sunday and the morning shoot-around on Monday. That would have been the time they spent on it. But you could see the players weren't comfortable with it. I found it a strange tactic.
But I disagree with you about the 2-3/3-2 with Jared as the rover in the middle. I think it has been extremely effective.

[Comment From DarrenDarren: ]
How do you explain the season Zach Randolph is having in Memphis? He's probably in the Top 10 in the league in pure talent, it's always been a question of harnessing it. But wow, he is on a mission thus far. 3-pointers are non-existent. A tremendous improvement for a veteran. Good to see the team over .500.
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:45 Darren
12:47

Well, he played like this for the Knicks early last season before he was traded. I thnk the move to the Clippers threw him off a bit and then being on a losing team, Zach is the type of guy to shut it down. He'll always get his numbers, but you're seeing a guy who knows how to score and he's paired with a big man (Marc Gasol) who doesn't get in his way down low and also works on the boards. It's great to see because Zach was one of my favorite Knicks to cover.

[Comment From KevinKevin: ]
Have you seen Jordan Hill on defense? Goes for the block every time. That is why he isn't playing. He is completely lost. His talent is clear but I am afraid he doesn't have that so called "it" factor. When he is in the game he just doesn't seem like he has a solid grasp of the game.
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:47 Kevin
12:50

Easy does it. He is aggressive because that's his job. He is supposed to contest. Would you prefer another Knicks big who takes charges? I wouldn't kill him for that. Jordan gets into a game and he knows it's his chance to prove himself, so you have to expect him to try to make plays. I can't fault him for that. But I do agree with you that he has yet to show an "it" factor that you want to see out of a lottery pick. I think he may become a nice role player in this league, but so far he doesn't give you any impression that he has all-star potential. Still too early to label him a bust. I think it's only fair to judge him once he has consistent minutes and finds a comfort zone on the court.

[Comment From JonJon: ]
Alan, Chad Ford wrote yesterday that the Knicks are contemplating possibly reversing course and using at least some of their cap space to acquire a player on a long-term deal at this trade deadline. Have you heard anything similar? Are the Knicks becoming more pessimistic about their chances with Lebron?
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:50 Jon
12:53

Yes, that has always been an option and I've written that many times. It depends on what type of player is available. If they can get a guy they can build around, they'll do it. But it depends on the player. I don't see the Knicks taking themselves out of the running for LeBron or others this summer unless they either know LeBron is going to re-sign with Cleveland or, more importantly, unless they can get a marquee guy from a team desperate to sell at the deadline.
The only problem is, the Knicks will have more flexibility to make trades for big contracts this summer, when they have cap space. Right now, all they can do is match salaries. In the summer, they can take on a bigger contract and send less back and the team that trades with them would also get a sizable trade exception, which are extremely valuable. Mark my words there.

Do you think Knicks can sign a max free agent and make it work with David Lee by signing him to a lower cap number in year 1?

Right now that's probably the first option.
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:53

[Comment From DavidDavid: ]
After the big 4 (Lebron, Wade, Johnson & Bosh) is there any free agent the Knicks would want over David Lee? Will Lee get his 10 million from the Knicks this summer (or anywhere else for that matter)?
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:53 David
12:56

David is different from those four you mentioned. He would be a wingman to a LeBron, not a centerpiece. So I don't think you say they sign a player "over" David. They sign a marquee player first, then see what they can offer to David. That's my guess. Again, I keep saying this, but there may be far more options for the Knicks to rebuild through TRADES this summer because of their cap space. We can't get so fixated on signings like in baseball. With the cap, it's much different. In fact, I would venture to say if the Knicks were able to lure LeBron, they might do it via a sign-and-trade, which benefits everyone.

Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:56 Tommy from California
12:58

That's a tough call because when Larry was playing, bench scoring was down. Now that Nate is back, you get more out of the bench (at least until Al got hurt) but you now don't have another guy who can facilitate in the backcourt. It's Catch-22. You need Nate's boost, but you know you can't rely on him to run the offense. This is why the Knicks need to find another true PG.

Good call. I think Foye could work because he finished well. Not the best passer but could develop into one. Defense? Hmm. I wouldn't give up the farm for him, but not a bad option as an RFA.

Fair point on the zone. It seems that there are always openings against it but somehow it does end up being effective. I suppose that speaks to Jeffries defensive skills/importance. Speaking of which, do you think Lebron could/would play a similar role? Might the knicks convince lebron to come and actually play PG? The idea of a lineup of Lebron, Chandler, Gallo, Lee, 3 point shooting center (frye, murphy, camby or even brian cook) is scary good. No team could match up.
Wednesday January 13, 2010 12:59 Ben (NYC)

No question LeBron will be PG here and with a solid backup PG off the bench, he could move to other positions throughout the game. Hey that lineup you posed there, I'll say Frye because he could come cheap and can also block shots, would be very interesting.
