Wilson Chandler, in his third NBA season, certainly is playing a lot better than he did at the beginning of this season.

Wilson Chandler isn't a chest-bumper, back-slapper or fist-shaker. He doesn't feel the need to emote every time he makes a dunk. He often doesn't even feel the need to smile.

But just because his face doesn't telegraph his emotions doesn't mean Chandler doesn't have them. A brief conversation Friday after practice was all it took to see that the Knicks' starting shooting guard is thrilled with the way he has been playing lately.

"I'm definitely having a lot of fun out there,'' said the 6-8 Chandler, who scored a season-high 27 points Thursday night in the Knicks' 97-93 win over visiting Charlotte. "When you win in New York in the Garden and you're playing well, it's definitely a great feeling.''

Chandler thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of making the clinching free throws in front of a sellout crowd at the Garden. The game marked the fourth time in five games that Chandler has scored at least 23 points.

"He's been playing really well,'' coach Mike D'Antoni said of Chandler, 22, whom he moved into the starting two-guard spot at the beginning of December. "It's everything. His defense, his shot selection. He's making plays for other guys. I think he's just getting better.''

Chandler, in his third NBA season, certainly is playing a lot better than he did at the beginning of the season, when he was dealing with a cranky left ankle and the Knicks lost nine of their first 10 games.

Chandler, who had arthroscopic ankle surgery during the summer, averaged only 12.0 points and shot 38.9 percent in his first 18 games. In his last 17 games, he has averaged 18.0 points and shot 52.4 percent.

Chandler wasn't able to practice during the summer as he rehabbed from the ankle surgery, and he said it still was bothering him a lot at the beginning of the season.

"It was definitely a hard time for me,'' Chandler said. "When you know you can do things and you're just not doing them, it's tough. I just thank coach D'Antoni for sticking with me, because sometimes when you're playing bad, you can get lost in the rotation.''

D'Antoni had a lot of incentive to stick with Chandler. It's the young players such as Chandler and Danilo Gallinari who are the future of the team, the ones whose development this season could be a part of the package that lures a big-name free agent to sign with the Knicks this summer.

D'Antoni believes that Chandler has become a more complete player during the past month. "A lot of it is his ability to make somebody else better,'' D'Antoni said. "He's become a very good teammate offensively and defensively. He's not overplaying his hand. He's playing what's given to him. That's impressive. It's hard to teach.''

Notes & quotes: Al Harrington (sore left calf) did not practice. He is listed as questionable for Saturday night's game at Houston.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Good lookin out kam!

I love how Wikson talks about finally feeling that winning Garden spirit. Just like someone said, you hear chants of defense by the Bleacher Creatures unassisted by the sound guys. Big up the Trinity of Lee, Chandler & Gallinari...

I just want to see my Knicks back in the playoffs in the Springtime! Cute chicks in the city wearing Knicks jerseys watching games in a bar somewhere or at your homie's house... 90s reminiscin'!

I'm a lillll Allenfan'd coming up on 4:20 a.m. and just came up with a formula for the off-season:

Lee-Chandler-Gallo = LCG
LeBron James = LBJ

LBJ + LCG + = 2010

I do like the way he goes about his business and not preening or yelling after a dunk. If it leads to a win then celebrate the victory but I can't stand guys like in the NFL who makes a tackle in the first quarter and starts jumping around like he did it for the first time in his life!

Ditto for Nate, but we know he is a chicken head mentality, and for him he must think its for the first time!

When Nate starts hitting big shots at big moments and the game is sealed I can go for that, but losing by 20 and jumping around like the idiot is plan stupid.

I'm really getting a warm tingly feeling about Chandler. He's one of the perfect SG/SF prototypes out there, right in the mold of Butler, Jefferson, and so on. Every winning team needs a guy like him, and we have him. I still get a sick feeling whenever he shoots a three that's not from the corner, but almost every other shot feels automatic. I even like it when he shoots that 15 footer in transition. He gets amazing lift on his shot so he's not bothered by the defense, and it's reminiscent of D'antoni's old offense with the Suns.

This is what is beginning to impress me. I'm big on the idea that players has to find a comfort zone before they can reach their full potential. It seems that Chandler is finding his. He still makes mistakes, but more and more you see him doing something positive when he has the ball, and more importantly, not making major mistakes.

I hope he continues to grow as a player. I really like his stoic, quiet assassin attitude on the court- very old school IMO.

It's been a pleasure watching Wilson and Gallo grow as players this year, just as it has been to see Lee emerge as a star. It is also good for the franchise and good for the fans to have a chance to see their draft picks blossom. I expect to see Hill, Douglas, and Landry step up more next year, and hopefully Walsh will find a way to keep Lee.

Let's hope Lebron's agent is making a NYK compilation DVD for his star player this season. If not, Brian please ask the video guys at the garden to make one for him.
